Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum!

I actually found this website while searching for online buyers.

What would be a good everyday lens?

I'm using a d300 with a few lens here n there. Initially i had a 18-200mm vr1 as my everyday lens and it worked perfectly fine! covering a wide range and allowing me to move around with one lens which provided complete convenience. However, i recently sold it away as i went on to purchase a 24-70mm f2.8! it has been perfect and the images this lens produced has been really exciting. However, im still looking for an affordable everyday lens which as a wider angle (eg: 18-70mm).

Any recommendations besides that? Is the 18-70mm sufficient?

thanks!

Consider getting the 16-85VR, the 18-105VR or even a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8.

The 18-70 is a very nice lens for the price, but if you are willing to sacrifice a bit of length then the Tamron is an awesome lens.

The 16-85VR has a great range, and is nice and sharp, but at the same time it is not cheap. The 18-105VR is a tad cheaper than the 18-70 (if you can find it new) and is not a bad lens, although it does have a bit more CA than I would like.

17-55mm AFS f2.8 looks like the obvious choice if your trying to get a bit wider, this would couple with your existing 24-70 nicely. However you must consider your upgrade path, if your looking to move to full frame the 17-55mm will not accompany you thought. However the resale value of a 17-55 is very good.

I have a secondhand 17-55 which I have had for just over a year, it is probably the most used lens in my collection. It has great build quality and really great optics.

There was a member selling one just the other day (mdboo?) any price from 1k to 1.3k is a good buy imo.

There are also sub 1k options with the Tamron alternative, member Ant recently got one and is very happy with it, Cameron (aim54x) also has one and is very happy with it, I quite often see him with it attached.

There is always the Nikkor AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8 or the Nikkor AF-S 16-35mm f/4 VR if you were concerned about the upgrade path, but neither of these lenses are all that budget.

yes I love my Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8
