Judging by what I've received this morning, we can expect to see something on Wednesday next week.

Perhaps a smudge earlier, given that they often choose to make their announcements in Europe.

Hmmmm ....

Things just got a whole lot more interesting.

Lunch today was at the Slide Nightclub on Oxford St, courtesy of the good folks at SanDisk.

Where they introduced a nice half dozen of new products. A new USB3 card reader. A storage device called The Vault, which is to be used for archival storage of your important documents and photos. A couple of new USB sticks.

And a new SDXC card. up to 64GB storage, with 90MB/s write speed and 95MB/s read speed. And while this is a class 10 device, well suited for movies, they were also pressing the point (at least, this is what I took from the presentation) that these are cards very squarely focused towards the professional market.

Also on hand were Marcus Bell, and Jasin Boland, both noted photographers. Some of you may know Jasin; he's a lovely guy - great personality, great shooter, and a Nikon ambassador. He shoots movie stills as his day job; Marcus is a top notch wedding 'tog, and spoke about people buying $6K wedding packages. Jasin mentioned some of the challenges he faced in his work, shooting stills of stunts that might cost up to $1million to set up.

In the case of both photographers, the fact is that their shooting leaves no room for errors: they need to get the images, first time, every time.

I had a good chat with Jasin, and he mentioned that he is also going to be at tomorrow's Nikon launch events. While he didn't tell me what's being launched, he did say that he's been using the subject of the launch for a little while ...

Now, here's where we can start to spread some rumours, if you like: consider that we have two very well respected pro togs at a product launch that is featuring high speed, pro-oriented memory cards.

This haoppens on the day before Nikon makes a new product announcement, and at which at least one of those togs will also be present ...

And at this time, Nikon don't actually make a camera targeted towards the pro market that takes the SDXC format.

This does not sound like PHD, nor MILC territory to me.

Ladees and gennlemen: place your bets ...

I heard they are recalling all D3 bodies, and never releasing a successor to the D700s.

That way, my bodies will stay top of the line!!!!!

(Although, maybe I can pick up a cheap D3x when the D4 is announced.....)

I suspect that Nikon is buying the Pentax 645D line and upgrading it to use a new line of Nikkor lenses and faster Expeed engine. The 645D already use SD cards but with the faster Expeed engine, will need the faster SDXC. Are we in April yet ??

Interesting rumour. I just wonder - why? Why would they want to go there? Their P&S's are firmly seated at the sucky end of the spectrum, do they need another me-too line? And a new lens mount as well? So they'll be making FX, DX and CX lenses?

I hope this rumour turns out false, bigger companies than Nikon have gone from profitable to crap by trying to do everything rather than concentrating on their strengths.

Cheers
Steffen.

David Richards generally has good sources, and of course a MILC was my first suggestion.

I guess I'll know at 2 this afternoon.

These "in-between" cameras are selling like hot pies in Japan - some estimate that they have 40% of the new camera sales already.

I suppose Nikon feel that they must be in that space. I agree that their P&S cameras are not all that well regarded.

I also wonder at the economics/marketing requirements to have another range of lenses, although if they wanted a smaller camera the size of the existing lenses would be a negative factor.

He is clearly unsure of what to make of it all.

He has used the word "controversial" three times in the first two sentences.

:D

While yes, it's probably more the issue of the distance from the rear flange to the focal plane in the camera. Making a MILC means no mirror box, and thus the resulting body can be significantly thinner and lighter. Any lenses used on the camera must still accommodate that distance, which would defeat the whole purpose of making a more compact (thinner) body as in being thinner, the F mount glass would need a significant extension to accommodate the appropriate spacing needed. When Sony introduced the NEX bodies, they also brought in a new mount (and some very nice glass, albeit in a limited range) as well as an Alpha mount adaptor. I expect that if Nikon go down this road, they may do likewise.

Of course, this could also open up the way for an adaptor that allows Canon glass to be used on a Nikon body too. Not that I see that as a really useful idea.

the foto fanatic wrote:He has used the word "controversial" three times in the first two sentences.

Indeed, and I noticed and wondered about that too. Like, how "controversial" can a camera really be? Can we all, please, think back to the last time we saw a "controversial" camera? Maybe one that made the front page (or any page?) of the smh? Was the subject of a story on ACA?

Got into trouble for absconding with a union's funds, perhaps? :)

Got caught sneaking out of a brothel? :nono:

If I see David today, I will try to make a point of asking him. :)

I could also ask the Nikon people as well ...

At least they had a the sense to keep to 10Mpix with that microscopic sensor. Canon clowns would have done a 24Mpixie instead and bathed us in a noise heaven.

On the other hand the sensor appears to be awfully small, about half the size of a micro four thirds sensor.

I did, and so I did.

He said it was because the camera was mirrorless. I don't see that as being all that controversial; I think on the Nikon 1, the sensor size may be the main point of controversy, but that will ultimately be determined by the quality of the images that the cameras produce.

I agree. If they are using the physics and mathematics currently in use, the pictures will have lots of noise or be smeared like vaseline. They used their wisdom and stopped at ISO 3200 which is a smart move.

It would seem that they want to firmly divide the DSLR and mirrorless market with image quality.

Very keen to see some samples with higher ISOs though. With the current lenses, you'd be using the high ISOs often, especially indoors.
