Insurance replacement for D300 should be a ????

Hello folks - I've not wandered by here for a long time so I guess a wave is in order

Recently a toe-rag half-inched my D300. I have insurance that will replace it "the current model" but I don't really know what that is or should be. Should I be expecting a D300S which I believe is still current or is perhaps a D7000 the go? Some specs are better, some are worse so I'm a little confused. I would really appreciate some opinions on this so I can discuss it with the insurance company.

Thanks for reading
Bob (no longer in Bull Creek)

Since there is yet to be a D400...I would be asking for a D600....but a D7000 wouldn't be too bad either. The D300s has been offically discontinued, I would argue that the D7000 is a tier below the D300 and ask for a D600.

It seems that the Nikon D300S is still a current model so that's what I'll probably be offered. Now the question is whether I could do better with the money (not that they will actually give me cash) but should I ask for a D7000 'cos it's a better camera?

Hey Bob, good to see you around again.

I would go with what Cam mentioned, push for the D600 and if not go for the D7000. Maybe take the credit and pitch in the rest for a D600 if you want to go FX? if they allow it.

Bummer that they still show the D300s on the website....

but according to this page, it has been discontinued

http://www.nikon-image.com/products/discontinue/camera/

I would talk to them about chipping into getting a D600.

Bob I did that a couple of years ago with some lenses. The insurer payed out to the retailer and I paid the rest to upgrade one lens.

Yay !!!!

The insurance company went with the quote they got from Hardly Normal's insurance section. They quoted for a D300S - and they've just contacted me with the "bad news" that a D300S is no longer available so they will provide a D600 at no further cost :) :)

Seems I got the best outcome without needing to do much.

Well, I hope you have the same bad luck as Bob and get the D800 for no additional cost.
