Off to the Doctor....D300

Yes my D300 is off to see the doctor again....some of you may recall the dramas I had with Nikon Australia a few years ago regarding getting the screen on this camera fixed, this time the camera has decided to become a paperweight on me. To be fair it has been a more than a few weeks since I last used this camera, but when I grabbed it today it refused to turn on. Thinking it was the battery I pulled out the battery and then placed a fully charged unit into the camera...nothing...not even the customary green flash of the CF busy light or the top LCD showing my remaining shots. Dead as a door nail.
I pulled out the battery and the card, let the camera sit and charged a battery to full, just to be sure. NOTHING. A quick call and chat with a good technician and friend confirmed that it was going to be the painful process of getting the camera to the repair shop and getting it evaluated, to make matters worse, the tightening of parts supply means I have to take the camera either to Nikon Australia (who's repair department I have no love for) or another tech that is able to get parts (I know another tech who can...so this is where the camera is destined).
Hopefully my faithful D300 will be back and shooting again soon.

that sums up how i feel Rodney......Sentimental value means I want to get the camera fixed, but it may be quite expensive and the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Cameron, based on your educated opinion, what is the most likely explanation?

Power board failure.....uncertain of the cause. Could be an easter egg left over from this camera's adventures at Nikon service all those years ago. Could be a moisture problem (unlikely though)

If all else fails here, perhaps send it to POON.... Here is an example of a FOB power board from China.

I'm not sure it's worth it - you could likely buy a second hand D300 for less than that if you really wanted one.

I am not going to buy a 2nd hand D300, I would prefer to fix mine (known history vs unknown history)...but yes it is at that price where I really do have to question if it is worth fixing, esp since I am now primarily using the D700. Only sentimental value keeps me from writing it off completely.

Whats the shutter count? If its not a low mileage example, as Rodney says its probably not worth it. Pick up a second hand one if you need to replace it. I have been considering selling mine, but low mileage bodies (5 -10K clicks) are going for around $450 -$550 on the big auction site so i'm probably going to keep it and dedicate it to doing macro work.

Mine has been owned since new.....just on 60K shuttter count (incl the 10k that MrDarcy put on for me). It just hurts that the camera has decided to become comatose, it has been my ever reliable, all faithful companion for so many years. I have to admit that photography and that camera has gotten me through some ugly times.
That bloody camera is better travelled than I am...
