Hi
I an thinking of buying one old carl zeiss lens but there are two , one is carl zeiss Jena 135 f3.5 MC, and other is carl zeiss Pentacon 135/2.8 all M42 mount, the former f3.5 is more expensive than the f2.8 ( $100 and $80 ), they come with M42 EOS adaptor , but I do not know much about carl zeiss as they were made in GDR any thought on these lens , and which one to get.

Thank

For that price... I'd get both. :D

If I didn't like one than I'd sell it later on.

Any lens with the Zeiss name on it will be a good one. They make beautiful optics.

Be careful buying from camera stores in VN. When macka and I were there we had a poke around, there are some very good deals, but make sure to check the item carefully first. The most important thing is to hold the lens up to a bright light with the the aperture wide open, any scratches, dust or fungus will be visible.

Good luck :)

Does that apply to Sony's P&S? :)

With Sony, they print the name on the rear surface of the lens. :)

Some of the Jena optics were made when the Jena plant was in the E. German zone and they run the gamut from mediocre to quite good. Be careful and check out some of the Zeiss collector sites.

My collection is primarily items from 1840 to around 1930 and most are box cameras or small folders and subminiatures. I have no Jena lenses that are not attached to cameras so this is just an opinion formed by reading about Jena on and off over the years.

Sony makes the lenses and Zeiss tests them to whatever the Carl Zeiss T* spec is. If they pass, they get the Carl Zeiss name.

Spada,
Carl Zeiss Jena is Carl Zeiss Jena, and Pentacon is Pentacon. They were two different companies. Pentacon was in Dresden, and Carl Zeiss in, err, Jena. Pentacon is mostly famous for its SLR bodies (35mm and MF).

Both factories made optics that ranged from very good (primes) to ordinary (consumer stuff and some zooms). Not all of them where multi-coated, look for the *.

One example: the Carl Zeiss Jena 28mm f/2.8 is not as good as the AiS Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 but better than the AF Nikkor 28mm f/2.8.

Cheers
Steffen.
