Olympus OM-D leaks and First Impressiions

If what Petapixel is showing is legit - and I have no reason to doubt them - the OM-D (due to be announced at lunchtime tomorrow, Sydney time) looks to be a very nice body design.

Check the chrome bodied version about two thirds down this page. Sadly, that's a mock-up, and I doubt it's what we'll be seeing tomorrow.

Yes the OM-D isnt far away....this will be interesting, and I think they have a done the OM-1/2 justice in the styling. A two-tone chrome colour scheme would sell well I would imagine (so long as it is not painted chrome)

If they go down a similar design path (conceptually) to what they did with the PEN, then this could be a very nice line of cameras.

David,

You looking at that Yaris again?

The original OM bodies come from the mid-late '70s, when SLR cameras were truly at their best. Nikon FE/FM etc, Canon A1, and Olympus OM-1 were at the top of the charts in terms of elegantly designed bodies, and I think that they certainly still carry their stylish lines very well some 40 years later.

Looks better than expected if you trim all the grips and battery holders away.

And no, Gary. Apparently it does not leak! :biglaugh:

Rumors are that it has the same sensor as Panasonic G3/GX1 and a ~$500 premium

Still, it's good to see Olympus putting the Band back together. I love my OM.

Indeed.

They were certainly a great camera, especially the OM-1. Great glass, and a true classic body.

What's with that faux pentaprism? I thought this was a mirrorless camera?

Cheers
Steffen.

The EVF has to go somewhere...

It's actually where they've put the movement sensors. At eye level.

Just came back from lunch with Mr Olympus. Contrary to my expectations, there was pre-production hardware present and able to be played with.

The OM-D is an advance upon where the Pen is, and I think it may also spell the end for the E series.

In the hands, it feels very nice. Focus acquisition is very swift, and it has an articulated touch screen on the back. The switch between the rear viewfinder and eye level EVF is a little slower than I'd like, but much faster than the Sony A77.

There are some very cool features too. How about in camera live curve adjustments? Or in camera, live aspect selections? These seem to work with both the rear and EL EVF.

Video is 1080P @ 30fps; 60fps interlaced.

Availability will be April, pricing is yet to be determined.

I liked it a lot.

Anyways, I'll pass on the OM-D, but maybe the upcoming E-LO will be music to my ears…? :rotfl2:

Cheers
Steffen.

Cameron, a sweet looking camera there, with a sensational lens. (I have played around with the 45mm 1.8 and it's a first class prime.)

What's your take on the new setup, especially the AF?

I can say that the camera feels nice in the hand, I have been told that the buttons will be nicer as will the build, come production. AF is FAST! definitely faster than the EP3 (current champion - disregarding the J1/V1)
