hdr? is it possible to do with one picture?

haven't really used hdr, i wanted to see if i can fix a few old pics but i haven't shot with bracketing. is there a way?

If you shot in RAW then you can get a decent amount of detail back by adjusting the exposure compensation. Do one lower and one higher, and one in the middle and then merge the appropriate bits.

Easy enough, if you need the specifics just say so.

i just had a go at using a raw file outputted to three bracketed exposures but the hdr generator said not enough range.

I tried the same thing yesterday, and got the same error, not enough dynamic range.

Redline - HDR merge in PS will only work on different NEFs... can't save different versions of one NEF with different conversions etc.

Has to be done manually with layers etc.

Not really. If the scene contains more contrast than the camera can handle then detail in a single image with either be lost permanently in the noise floor or through overexposure.

By bracketing the exposure and merging several images it is possible to extend the dynamic range that you are able to capture.

If all the detail you require is in a single image (JPG or NEF), then with appropriate massaging you should be able to "fix" the image. However, multiple images may allow you to improve the quality of the final output.

HDR is only useful with some camera models, as they're with High Dynamic Range as the D200 or D2 series (Someone told me that ) and it's easy to fix or using HDR with NEF than other camera as D50/ D70 or P&S.
