Nikon capture or NX?

Postby Alex on Wed Oct 18, 2006 12:04 pm

Having updated to a new PC I am now faced with the choice between the old nikon capture and the new capture NX. Does anyone use NX over the older versions? What do you think of it?

Thanks
Alex

I have both and NX is quite good, but I am still a Photoshop fan for most things.

NX is quite different to the old versions of Capture and would take a bit of time getting used to. I haven't used it extensively enough to perhaps give a good critique of the program, but what I have used of it I liked. I have read that it's supposed to be faster loading NEFS etc. but I haven't found it to be. In saying that, I haven't batch processed 100's of photos at once, so perhaps this is where the speed comes into play ?!?

I've also been playing with the Adobe Lightroom Beta, which I think will be fantastic when it's finally released.

Sorry to wander OT.

Capture NX has some very powerful tools......in particular, the control points. I have yet to master all of it but so far I am impressed.

Once thing that does seem to be missing in NX is d-lighting option which I was a big fan of.

You shouldn't be underexposing your photos Alex, then you won't need to use D-lighting

D-lighting is available in NX under 'adjust/light/d-lighting'.
My pleasure! :D

Thanks Matt. So far I like NX quite a bit. What about camera control? Does it have camera control or is it purely for post processing?

I used Capture NX until my trial ran out... haven't done anything about it since then but I might upgrade to it. I really like the concept of the control points and I got some very pleasing results in a short time. I also like the fact that you can make a lot of edits and save it back to a .NEF, which results in a much smaller file size compared to the Photoshop 16-bit PSDs.

My main issue was that the program didn't feel very stable and I had it crash a few times. It was a real memory hog too. So, if Nikon can sort out some of the bugs and make the interface a bit smoother, it will be a winner...

Be sure to check out the NX tips and tricks FAQ at Nikonians

hi

im also ussing NX (thanks to birddog) i really like the controls and the batch processing, I like the option that i can copy and paste the setting (unsharp, exposure, etc) from one photo to another but yes it is memory hungry.

I am using NX as well and finding that it occasionally crashes. Are there any comments from others using it that can help or should we wait until the next version is released that may be more stable?

An obvious but hard to answer question:

How much is a full copy of NX?

Forum price is Au$200, via Poon.

Don't know how much it sells for in the stores, but Capture 3 was Au$300 several years ago.

At even half of that price, and for that version, it would have been very overpriced. 200 for NX is probably not too bad.
