Hey guys, i saw this on ebay and was wondering what you think?
I want a lense to shoot car action shots.... If it seems okay i might be bidding on it. (Or should i find one in Australia)

Any other ideas welcome....eg. should i go for another type of lense rather than that one?

Cheers Min

I havent ever used one, so you might be best to wait for some comments from someone who has, but ...

Thom Hogan seems to think it's a sharp lens ...review here

Great lens Blackwater, but that price will go up, then add freight and GST and you are awful close to a new one from Birddog. Do the numbers and remember they charge GST on the freight as well

MATT,
Forget about this lens, It's slow and not worth to put your investment in it!
Save your dough for the newer AF-S version.

Blackwater, I have the newer AFS version, the S/h AF versions seem to go for about $700-$950, as Birddy says it is not much more for the AFS version. The AFS is not lightning fast, but usefully faster than AF, just not quite as fast as you may expect for a AFS lens. I believe that the optical formula is the same between the two. It is worth buying the older if cheap enough, otherwise buy the AFS. Maybe you can try one at a minimeet in Adelaide?

Birddy, birdstalker or girlstalker?

Min, a common question, the usual answer is that is what your feet are for :D You get used to working with a prime and that lens is the cheapest way to get a high quality 300mm focal length

Min, this will help you fill the frame! I would buy the old AF version for $700 or under or the new one from Birddog at a members price. Very good quality for the money and the new one will work with the new Teleconverters

Here is a shot taken by the 300 AFS + 1.7 TC for 510mm with -2 sharpening (low):
