What's going on, are most Nikon users envious of Canon gear? I am amazed that some people feel left out, is that jealousy? I do not care what deal others got, good on them!

At the time i wanted to go to digital, it was the D70 or the 300D
the 300D felt cheap and nasty, i needed a new zoom and flash for my canon so i figured it was time to see what all the fuss was about with nikon gear.

I purchased a Teddy Bear this morning for the sum of $10. I named him Mohammed. This afternoon I sold him on E-Bay for $30. My question is, "Have I made a prophet?"

Maybe its not a Nikon/Canon thing, Reguardless of the brands the 5D is quite a step up from the D70..

Matt,
You are right. Maybe Canon knows something about a new Nikon camera and this would be a premptive strike (just dreaming...). The big step up is FF and judging by the reaction, most of us would like that.

Well, yes.

But I'm getting a little confused now.

I've lost count of the number of times that I've said this is one part of what I'm looking into in this.

Is there some part of that statement that I'm not stating clearly enough?

And if it's as clear as I believe it to be, why are others still asking those same questions, again and again, rather than leaving it to the dialog that that I'm having with Thanh on this?

I remember testing out two of Stubbys lens at the mini meet. those alone and the other lens that I don't know of is already a couple of grand.

Ok, now I'm really confused.

Stubbsy got his kit earlier this week. Gieven that he's had his gear for just a few days, to which minimeet are you referring when you say that you've tested two of his lenses?

or am I missing something here?

Oh i'm refering to his Nikon gear back in November last year at one of the mini meets when I was in Sydney . Most of the gear like the 12-24mm 70-200VR were his that I tested out on my camera on that day. Well just those two lens and his 24-120mmVR are already worth a few $$$ so to swap all of that must take some real convincing :D

That is where it gets interesting.

I don't know what Stubbsy's lens collection was, but from his post the only decent lenses he has received is the 70-200 IS and 50 1.4. The other lenses - 28-135, 20-35 are rather ho-hum. I do not know enough about the 15 fisheye to comment.

So presuming Stubbsy had some expensive lenses to swap, maybe the deal is nothing more than being offered a "good" trade-in price for his equipment - ergo sacrificing some of his expensive lenses to get the expensive body (5D).

Canon 20D and a bunch of lovely L glass and a 580EX. Benro tripod. Manfrotto monopod. Lowepro and Crumpler bags. And a pair of Sigma teleconverters, and some Kenko tubes.

I give you some idea:
The Canon 70-200IS is more expensive than Nikkor 70-200VR
The Nikkor 50/1.4 is also cheaper than Canon
And other Canon lenses are his bonusses, I think he got a pretty good deal, and he still have some other nice Nikkor glasses which he didn't want to trade-in

Having spent a little over $7.5K on non-DX Nikkor lenses in the past few months I find this all a bit intruiging. Curious move by Canon.

Surely they didn't believe that Nikon wouldn't release a full frame camera in the near future. Just give the D2X some sales time and it will be superceded.

My thoughts

My ideal setup?

D2x with 70-200 mounted (105-300 2.8!). The dense pixels mean megapixel advantage with telephotos in the future world of 35mm FF.

D3x FF with 17-35 mounted. (in my opinion, the best possible rectillinear wide available on any 35mm body, anyone disagree :!: )

telephoto wise...
mine would be the eos-1d mark IIN (8mp version) with the 400/f2.8 L IS lens... 1.3 crop factor taking it to 520/f.2.8 with IS... YUMMMMM

(think i have the right model names... im not a canon guru!)

I personlly am rocking the 1DMKIIn and a 20D. The 70-200 IS L lives on the camera. it truly is amazing. The 15mm fish is very acceptable on the 1.3 crop, where almost rendered useless on the 20d's 1.6. I dont have the 1.4 50mm, only the 1.8. from what I have read though it is far superious in build, although image quality difference is not worth the extra $300.

I think it would be great if Canon started supporting some of us dedicated Canon die hard that have already burried themselves in dept and gave some stupendous discounts on the 400 2.8 IS L. Man I'd do some nasty things to get my hands on one of those things. ;)

How nasty?

:)

Check out our Photo Imaging World threads, and come down and join us on the day. The Canon stand usually has a number of big beasties such as this (and bigger) available for the plebs to play with.

And we'll be supping thereafter. :)

How nasty you ask?

We'll I'd be more than happy to play along in a practicle joke that would get the blood boiling of jealousy for many of the readers on the site ;)

As for the convention, I'll was always going to be checking it out anyway. Maybe I'll see some of the forum heads on the day, although I have no idea what anyone looks like ;)

Newidude,
I'm around Williamstown, Boat Harbour and Nelson Bay very often, we mostly have the gathering up here at least once a month with few resident "boy scouts" as Stubbsy, Radar, Curly, so there's a chance for you to meet us somewhere in the region.

For PIW 2006, yes, it's worth for you to dring down and join the Sydney's gangs.
