More Nikon speculation for those that care.....

Thought I'd have a look at the dpreview forums and found something that may be of interest (or not) to our own members.

(1) Nikon to announce the D2XS in a few months
From a guy called jeff-c

"D2Xs is indeed coming, my source expects it within 60 days for announcement. The upgrade is minimum as the name suggests. Worth mentioning are the offcial support ISO range to 1600 and larger buffer.
Just wait for official announcement in the next few weeks. "

Comments on his clairvoyant record to date:
"Jeff's record is solid. He NAILED the D200, 18-200 & ring flash announcement quite a bit beforehand. Also the coolpix announcement before that."

Nikon and Full Frame.....i know tiresome

"Acording to "color Foto", a german magazin about photograpie, Nikon will announce a FF DSLR, probably at photokina, shipping mid - end of 2007."

Text from magazine was as follows:
"For the first time, there has been a confirmation from an official Nikon source of a rumour that has been denied again and again. On March 30, Yasuo Baba, Manager Professional Services of Nikon GmbH, held a speech with the title "Perspectives of the digital medium from the point of view of a camera producer" at a forum of the "Arbeitskreis Digital Imaging" of the initiative hamburg@work with an audience of approx. 100 people. In the discussion which developed he explained: "In 2007, there will be a sensor revolution. Nikon will bring out a digital slr camera with a full frame sensor within the next 18 to 24 months"."

Ah... DPR, the internets major source of invective and disinformation.

1. Rumoured D2XS. Minor if true. The original D2X already has a 17 image raw buffer. Perhaps up to D200 spec of 22 frames. ISO 1600 "official" spec. How is that different to Hi-1? Probably still the same noise and who uses it anyway?

2. Nikon FF. They really are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't. Currently they are being pillored because their sensor isn't 36mm x 24mm. Just because Canon has one, Nikon suck because they don't? All the FF acolytes on the DPR forums seem to ignore the edge softness and vignetting that Canon FF "can" suffer with certain lenses and at certain apertures. They conveniently forget that the lenses currently available were designed for film and not a CCD/CMOS sensor. They are different mediums with different requirements as to how and at what angle the light hits the imaging plane, especially at the edges.

To me a good solution would be a ~ 30mm x 20mm sensor. Higher resolution for the pixel peepers but without the edge softness and vignetting issues that a 36mm x 24mm sensor would suffer from. A sort of compulsary cropping of the crappy bits around the edges.

You mean like the Canon 1.3x 1D series cameras? If Nikon went that way I think they'd cop it big, because the FF "purists" would still be unhappy but the crop lens owners would be up in arms. Although a 16MP, 1.3x crop Nikon would have advantages - smaller and lighter than the 1D Canon's, and if it had the 8fps and 2x crop option of the D2 it's be quite a useful camera. Even if the noise and shipping delays were up to the usual Nikon standards.

I like the way the rumored shipping date is a while after the rumoured announcement date. I wonder if this indicates an acceptance by Nikon that they look silly announcing stuff as "available" up to a year before you see it in shops?

When Nikon released the D2Hs there wasn't many D2H left on the shelves, same as when they released the D2x the D1x also became scarce.

Gee, that sounds like the best of both worlds!! My wide angle lenses would be even better for taking pics of our "wide, brown land" and yet the same camera would still cut the mustard for long telephoto and sports photography. I'll take one.
