D200 - white balance encryption?

Postby rokkstar on Wed Jun 28, 2006 9:03 am

Just a quick question.

With the imminent arrival of my D200 I suddenly remember some controversy regarding white balance encryption in Nikon cameras. Does this affect the D200?

At present I use photoshop to process my shots, and edit the RAW file before they come in using a handy interface that PSCS provides. WIll I still be able to do this?

I'm using PSCS now with my white balance encrypted D2X. I don't see that this will be any different with PSCS and the D200

I don't imagine that'll be an issue.

Shooting infrared will be, however.

With the imminent arrival of my D200, I am reading the manual like a big geek.

The manual talks about adjusting white balance in Nikon Capture 4.4 or later.

The dpreview review is silent on the issue of white balance encryption.

In short, I don't know, but I am so excited about getting the camera I just wanted to post to the thread. :D

It is different with the D2x and CS2. Nikon and Adobe now get along well. All the RAW options you could want.

Can I ask - what colour space and mode do you use?

Most of the time - sRGB Mode IIIa (if I'm shooting JPG) - I like the more vivid colours and the punch it gives

If I shoot RAW, it doesn't matter

I have all 4 shooting banks set up on my D200

#1. Vivid JPG mode, sharpening +2, custom tone curve,sRGB Mode IIIa, Enhanced colour

#2. Portrait JPG, , sharpening +1, custom tone curve, sRGB Mode I, Normal colour

#3. Default RAW

#4. B&W JPG

Matt, PSCS2 works fine. Bridge can display D200 NEFs OK, and the raw converter works fine (PSCS2, I haven't tried PSCS).

Thanks Barrie, your shots are great, and I particularly like the colour you get. Surprised that you shoot jpg - I have been shooting RAW pretty much exclusively.

I like the look of your banks too, the bank capability in the D200 looks very useful.

For those who are about to get their D200, if you haven't done so already you need to update your Nikon Capture/View sofware to read the D200 RAW files, you also need to download an updated version of Adobe's RAW Plugin to read the D200 RAW files.

Nothing worse than getting your new camera, taking fantasitc shots and having to wait to view them while you donwload the new software..... Do it NOW and save the hassle later.....

It always come out as "Thnaks"

Thanks for the tip.

I've been looking around for the plugin, but obviously in the wrong place. Is it available for PS CS?

EDIT: Cancel that, found it!!

Matt,

I have CS2 but it should be backwards compatible, I'll have to read up on it a bit more!

OK, if you have Photoshop CS (not CS2) you need Adobe Cameraraw 3.3 available here

MAC
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/ ... ftpID=3270

THE OTHER ONE
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/ ... ftpID=3271

If you have CS2 you need Adobe Camera Raw 3.4 and the links are above in an earlier post
