MHD is a GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!I struggle with the whole photography thing for one major reason; my live in accountant (my partner - ) allows me no pocket money at all!
This makes buying stuff like new lenses and software and thing for only birthdays and christmas, and even then I am limited to a few dolars. MHD is a genius because... He pointed me in the direction of Gimp & UFRaw. This is a program that is in my very quick playing, Photoshop with an awesome RAW converter. The main difference is that it is absolutely FREE!!!!!!!!!!! The accountant and myself are very happy, She thanks you MHD!!!! Ed.
Proudly using cardboard camera, lens lust is cheap... buy more bog rolls!!!

On further playing this program continues to amaze me. One niggle is the fact that the main tool window always disappears behind the picture window, but I am sure that there is a fix for this.
On the plus side though this software is VERY VERY powerful. RAW interpretation is awesome, upsizing images really blows me away (the crispness and clarity of the upscaled image is rediculous!!!), I am struggling to find many differences from this and Photoshop (although I am no expert with Photoshop), except for the fact that one costs a HUGE amount and one is free!!!!!!!!! If you are tight arsed like my partner and need photoimaging software you should be looking no further than GIMP. Ed.

I use the GIMP and UFRaw as well (or try to ). I am still trying to get my head around curves and all the things that you can do in UFRAW and the GIMP to adjust images.
MHD (or anyone else) do you have any good tips, tricks, sites etc which help to explain and describe what types of things should (could) be done to get the most out of these programs. Thanks Russell
There is a version / modification to the GIMP called GIMPshop that is adjusted to appear similar to photoshop. This allows the readily available photoshop tutorials to be followed much easier. also puts all of the toolbars in the one window so that it is harder to loose them behind the picture window. I haven't played with it heaps, only a little. Might be worth you checking it out.
