Like anyone else here who has the SB800 flash, the Nikon Manual is a bit of a mystery, however one thing really intrigues me, and I was sort of hoping that someone here would have the answer.
In the start up instruction it first of all says to mount in the hotshoe (OK so far) then it says to turn the unit on, off and then on again before turning the camera on?
Why is it so?

Nikon want to make sure you do the right thing and knew all the switches prior to shoot with Nikon flash.

Thanks for pointing that out - personally I can seee no sense in this at all because the camera would not be communicating with the flash or vise versa

I assume as with most (if not all) electronic devices, the ON/OFF switch is also the 'Master Reset' button.

This is a Japanese ceromonial ritual for the blessing of a new electronic aquisition. It goes back many hundreds of years and the instructions should be obeyed with a contrite heart.

Matt - I did not realise just how old the SB800 was

Not necessarily you know!
I have an outdoor light with a motion sensor, if I switch it on, it goes on and after a little while it turns itself off until someone walks close enough for the sensor to pick it up and switches back on again, but if I switch it on and off and on again quickly, then the light stays on indefinetly.
So you never know, maybe nikon is using the same sensor
