End of July

Postby Antsl on Fri Jul 06, 2007 9:42 pm

Based on some correspondence with Nikon today I get the feeling they are going to be announcing something big at the end of July... probably the 25th as many overseas sources have been speculating. Mid Year Christmas!?

Speculation that I have heard in the past couple of days is that it will be a 19MP 1.3 lens conversion however I am hoping for something better. The last time I was talking to Nikon (PMA, Melbourne) a full frame was being hinted at.

19MP would be lovely. I'm happy with the 1.5 crop. Bring it on!

after looking through my f4 with a 20mm mounted on the front, FF definitely has appeal.

wides are wide again,

and

traditional primes and zooms are useful again. 80-200 is 70-200, not 140-300... im sure there are people on here that appricate the 1.5x crop, but i just find that after using a FF 35mm film body, a FF crop suits me better.

having said that, i am not going to go splash out on the next pro body and i can definitely make do with what i have got. although when i am purchasing glass, i do have an eye to the future... plus i am trying to make sure that most glass i buy i can use on the filum body.
body: nikon d200, d70s, f4s, f601.
lens:nikon 35-70mm f2.8, 70-300mm f4-5.6, 10.5mm f2.8, 20mm f2.8, 28mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8.
flash: nikon sb600, sunpak 383 (x1), sunpak 555 (x4), pocketwizard plus II (x4)

Hi James,

I'm with you... I have never been happy with the DX format because I have never been able to use my favourite lenses with it and Nikon have never replaced some of their best lenses for that format either.

While the wides might be missing out it is also worth considering that depth of field (or the bokeh, as some people prefer to call it) has less effect with the smaller DX formats... a 135mm f2.8 lens on a DX might have the same field of view as a 200mm f2.8 on a full frame but you will get a softer background on the FF.

I am guessing quite a few people on this forum will jump on the chance to buy a full frame however I think the price might deter a few people, even amongst the pros. My guess though is that Nikon will be working fast to get out an equivalent to Canon's 5D so that they can also compete again in the advanced amatuer market. Can't wait to get my hands on the full frame equivalent of the D200!

Heres hoping a few dreams come true soon!

I guess only time will tell. I hope the new sensor can compete with the noise of the Canons..

I would have thought a 1D MkIII competitor would be higher priority? Either way it will be good to see some competition at the high end. :)

Edit: oops, got my Canons confused!

OK ... I have just been on the phone to Nikon Australia and the news is Nikon Japan have put back their July announcements one month to the end of August. From what I can tell it sounds like there will be some public announcements and I get the feeling they will also be making some quiet announcements to a few in the media (non discosure agreements)(this is done to try and give us some hope!!) Sadly I am going to be in NZ at that time along with Peter Eastway (we are both judging at the NZ awards ) so we might be late getting the news... damn :(

Anyway, I tried to keep you up to date.... I think you guys should find yourselves another mole!!!

Cheers, Ants
