CF card failure - help needed

Hi all in Dslr land, took some shots at the Botanic gardens yesterday, copied from CF to harddrive, went to view them in PS and lo and behold, half the images were not available eg no thumbnail image was viewable. After clicking on the image, this message came up:

"Jpeg marker segment length is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete)"

I put the CF card back into my 30D and lo and behold, no images are now available at all. They seem to have vanished.

Question: Is this a camera problem or CF card problem?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Sounds quite odd..

I have a couple of copies of rescue pro (the one that comes with EX3 cards) DOnt know if they will work for the hdd's but youre welcome to have a copy and try it

Thanks Kyle, I'm not worried about the images from yesterday but thanks for the offer of the software all the same. I'm more concerned about the card and future failure on an important shoot etc.

I'd get a replacement, it's seriously not worth the risk imo

Seriously, do you have other cards to try in the same camera? Try alternate cards, different cameras .... see what falls through the cracks as your common denominator, and then you can try to address the problem.

Just to make sure, have returned and replaced CF card this morning with a new one, will see how this one goes, thanks for the reply.

In the future, you might want to try to reformat the card, this can sometimes clear up card problems. Although, if you are really worried, replacing the card (even more so when you can return the card for a replacement) is probably the best option.

I have had a very similar incident occur on one occasion with my D70 and Sandisk 1gb card. The only thing I could put it down to, was that the compact flash card was not correctly seated in the camera. The problem has not occurred since, but I do make sure that the card is securely in place when inserting it in the camera.

It wasn't a Transcend branded card, by any chance?

No, Fujifilm, and it has been replaced.

I had the same happen recently with a Sandisk 2 gig. (suspect it was a copy)...

I just opened them in PS, resaved them as their same file name and then they opened OK ever after that?

Weird stuff indeed.
