PMA 2005 New Sigma Lenses

Woohoo, the pre-PMA announcements have started, and look what Sigma have got.

mmmm 10-20mm, I wonder how much?

"Sigma 10-20mm EX DC HSM lens introduction : Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the launch of the new Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM lens. The Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM lens allows enjoyment of super wide-angle photography and it is a very powerful tool for indoor shooting and landscape photography with APS-C size image sensors of digital SLR cameras. Wide angle of view (102.4°at 10mm and 63.8°at 20mm) offers the photographer greater freedom of expression. Three SLD glass elements are employed for effective compensation of color aberration, which is a common problem with super-wide angle lenses. One piece of glass mold and two hybrid aspherical lenses, offer excellent correction for distortion."

Perhaps the new Sigma 10-20 will compete with the Nikon 12-24Dx in:
- Small size and light.
- More wider or similar with the Nikon 12-24Dx. (The angle of View and FOV at infinity)

Current:

Nikon 12-24DX is more wider than Sigma 12-24 (Angle of view and FOV at infinity)
Nikon 12-24Dx is lighter and small size than Sigma 12-24.

But we won't see them at least another year same as Tamron announced their 10-18 since Photokina in last October, but no sign of it, in the other side I'm happy to see what's the distortion on the Sigma at 10mm

Being a Sigma advocate (sorry GaryS) I would like to see some results from the lens first.

It should be a lot lighter than their 12-24mm as the 10-20mm is a DC lens. Distortion maybe a problem but as you say wonder what price!!

Sorry, forgot one more thing:
with the ability of playing filters on the new Sigma 10-20, currently the Sigma 12-24 could not accomodate any filter.

The Nikkor 10.5mm I was playing with at Birddog's on Saturday offers 180° feild of view. What am I missing here?

RRP of the new Sigma is same as the Nikon 12-24. The weight is lighter but it's not noticeable, size is similar to the Nikon 12-24Dx.

Above are closed sources from Sigma HKG. Thought I may wait to see when the product is available.

Sigma have also announced the release of a 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM lens which sounds interesting

This new Sigma lens is perhaps a small size, it shares the same filter with the Sigma 70-300 APO and similar to the built of other Sigma with plastic shell.
The Nikon 28/1.4 is with 72mm filter, built with metal construction and it looks very solid.

While the Nikon 28/1.4 is in the way of conventional AF motor but none other brand with HSM or AF-S can beat this gem in performance and quality yet. Nikon has the 28/2.8 but it's still not in the same league of the 28/1.4, I have to say and agreed all the Nikon glasses with 1.4 are the gems, though they're not in the new era but they still last and lot of seekers for those glasses.

Birddog, I would love to think the Sigma 30 1.4 will give the same quality as the Nikkor 28 1.4 for something like $500, but the Sigma 20mm 1.8 doesn't get very good reviews. This is a lens it would be bold to buy sight unseen and without independant reviews. It does seems like most of the newer Sigma's are an improvement on the past.

I dont think focussing system matters at all on a lens like this, unlikely to be used for sports photography, even manual focussing would be enough.

I wish it comes true with its price of $500.00 on the new Sigma 30/1.4.
Believe me it won't less than AU$900.00 if it becomes a gem in the range of Sigma glasses, look at Sigma 14mm/2.8, it's over AU$1200.00 (in HKG ) including shipping to Australia.
The Nikon 28/1.4 is settled at closed to or over Aussie 3K, so if that new Sigma 30/1.4 is good then you can guess how much is it!
