I was Just thinking, amongst all the photos that people have posted in this forum, there are some really great shots by any standard.
How about a section where the really oustanding ones could be placed for anyone to see at anytime, especially new members and guests,
I don't mind if the selection decision is left to Gary and Leigh - assuming that they don't mind the extra work. They can be pretty selective, that way it doesn't become too clogged up.
What do you guys think?

Phillipb

good idea. I had an idea a littel while ago that we have a photo of the week/month on the front page of the forum selected by Gary or Leigh. Maybe each of these could go to make up the showcase. After a while we would have quite a good gallery.

Cheers

Agree Jonsey, the main reason I thought of this is not so much for the ego trip but because after a while those shots are lost in the archives or the links to them are lost and also newcomers could see at a glance the standard of some of our members.

I think this is a great idea but I also think it's an added 'burden' for our Gary and Leigh, be interested to see what they say about this.

Lol.

They don't have the access for it... and, no offense to our great and wonderful Mods, they prob. don't have the skills.

Leigh I didn't mean the setup work, I meant the ongoing selection of photos. I'm sure you could give them access to uploading some images to a particular folder.

Couldn't agree more, let the 3 "G's" earn their keep  How about this for a format:

Open a pixspot account (if that's OK with Kristine) and place the Challenge winners and runner-ups in it. Since, it would be a lot of work to go back through all the previously posted images, we ignore them for now and the G's confer once a week and add the "Image of the week". If anyone has an image that they posted previously that they feel deserves recognition, they can repost it for consideration again, with the rule that it can not be reposted more than once.

There are literally 100's of pics I've seen here that deserve recognition, but too many at once would be overwhelming. One a week should be a managable showcase of the exceptional talents that our members possess.

Johndec, a lot of what you say makes sense, the Pixspot idea would be ok if that site was integraded into the d70Forum site (Whatever happened to that Idea), as it is I would rather see guests remain within this site then redirected out.

I don't think Pixspot and D70Users will integrate (my opinion, not Dad's) honestly... I would expect it to, if this option were ever made into a reality, run either on our server or someone elses (depending on if this site moves off of our server and onto professional hosting) and use something like the Singapore system we use for personal galleries or possibly Coppermine.. or something like that.

My opinion, though. :)

The picture of the week is my preference for this. We could relatively easily add this to the main forum page with a thumbnail image, linking to a bigger version sitting on either Kristine's or our server, along with an archive of prior weeks' selections.

I would have no problems with dropping a new Singapore folder set (Kristine uses Coppermine, btw) into the D70 web area on our server, but we'd need a custom version of the page first.

Adding the front page changes wouldn't be too difficult an issue, and once we decide upon the format, shouldn't be more than an evening's work for us.

Picture of the week makes the most sense to me, but I'm mindful of not burdening Leigh or the 4 G's with extra work - especially as the forum grows. Think of this - we currently have almost 500 members. If half of them post an image then that's 250 to view and to choose one from. Imagine doing this when we have 5,000 members

Maybe the picture of the week needs to be a themed image (simple though like birds or flowers or abstract or animals, rather than "a different prespective") and submitted images must match the theme.

Thinking while typing (dangerous I know) I'd actually have 5 POTW and let members vote on their fave using the phpBB voting system. At the end of the year we'd then have 52 top voted and a vote off for a picture of the year.

Now I'm excited! I'll go take a cold shower :D

Why don't we use the pics in the current challenge 3 or each challenge of our forum!
It's also a good ideal to let other sees we have such of competition running and these pics are our award.

I like both pics from the challenge idea (but this is the 3rd week and only 8 entries) but also like the idea of pic of the week from what came up during the week. All the mods could name a photo from within a post which caught their eye and then vote on those. Might encourage a few more images to be posted. Not comprehensive, but shares the glory around and the challenge entries could be put in the week after judging (maybe the winner is an automatic pic of the week)

Actually Glen, that's the exact same thing I was thinking of as I just read through these replies from today.
If we're going to do this, it makes more sense for the Mods to decide from the pics during the week that have shown up instead of creating the burden of having people submit shots and expect to automatically get in there.

I think that is the easiest Leigh, the mods pick the shots which spoke to them during the week, then choose one of that bunch. The Challenge winner can be an automatic after it is chosen

Although the idea has evolved from my original suggestion, I would be happy with Glen's idea. I certainly wouldn't want to see this as another competition with set subjects etc.
A weekly best shot and an archive of weekly best shots would be great.

I'm quite comfy with this, except that I'd probably prefer to not have the challenge winner be included, automatically or otherwise.

Gary, I like the idea of shot of the week from general postings etc and can the Challenge as there is enough Kudos there. 500 postings would keep it to about a dozen of our 500 members!

I'm not too thrilled about the 500 posts requirement idea.

And he joined early, after getting a personal invitation.

Glen, it would be a bit higher than 12, but not a lot. Less than 20 would be my guess, but we could query the SQL tables if we were so inclined.

Personally, if an image grabs you, and it's not in the challenge, then it's eligible.

I like the idea of an image in general... the ones posted in the image reviews section, just throughout the week. In fact, giving a mod the choice for the entire month or whatnot mightn't be a bad idea, either... lets people have some time off. :)

Don't like this idea AT ALL! I generally only post if I have something to say. I have been here since (almost) the beginning, and still have a hell of a long way to go to 500. Me thinks you were drinking when you posted this!

I DO like the idea of a showcase gallery - the suggestions on the Mods picking a pic each week make a lot of sense (afterall, they have to do something to earn their status!).

Looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with :)
