Did anyone watch Today Tonight just now.. They had a short segment about photographing and your rights.

Was very interesting. They just showed a couple of quick interviews of parents who were against the bans, and all the high profile athletes that were rallying against it as well.

They were calling for anyone to give their experiences of being harassed etc on their website http://seven.com.au/todaytonight

And ACA has just done the same hatchet job on the mayor of the council that's banned photos at the Des Renford Centre.

At the end of ACA 96% voted for parents rights to photograph their children at swimming carnivals :D

Whats the world coming to

Postby NeoN on Thu Feb 24, 2005 7:28 pm

Just when we thought that the experience of B B J was an isolated
incident, and was eventually resolved, watching tonights Current Affair
on channel 9 ,low and behold exactly the same problem arose, in more school's and more council's, and when they were asked to justify the ban's, everybody was passing the buck, leading to the Mayor, who was not available to comment.Chanel 9 said they will run a poll on the subject.
Looks like BIG BROTHER is watching us again, and we should start watching him too, befor it's too late.I thought I should let the Forum know
about the new development's.

I'd definitely contact Today Tonight BBJ.

As mentioned above, they specifically asked to hear from people with these experiences and promised to give a hard time to those 'authorities' who are trying to lord it over us. The problem you had with different treatments given to different camera types should be highlighted as well.

Give 'em heaps.

No one can manhandle you and take off your camera, so if it was me I would keep shooting and try them out in court.

Opens up a big can of worms for them if they do try try to stop you doing what you're doing. Terms like "Deprivation of Liberty" "Wrongful Arrest" and "Assault" come to mind. If they threaten to call the police, thank them for doing so - it'll save YOU having to make the call !!

Hi Manta and all, Dont you worry mate i have sent emails to those stations regarding my situation and as yet have not heard anything back except see all this is what is going on tv at the moment.

WOW seems we didn't hear about this till i got caught up in this and now it seems it is on everywhere. I spoke to my local member of parliment last nite at a photo shoot i did at an Office opening for MGA Whittles Group of Companies about what happend. he too is on my side as he too is getting a D70 soon, i know him well as he also is 1 of my fellow Ulysses motorcycle riders. He agreed with everything i had to say on the subject and no doubt if the situation arises i know he will defend any such policy being made here.

Anyhow we will see what happens and well we have not heard the end of this and will only get worse.

Cheers
John

I was looking through a book of Max Dupain's photography last night and it was full of candid shots of people in the streets, people in a queue at the butcher, kids playing in the street, people sunbaking on Bondi, a bar full of people all wearing hats... It really helped me to imagine what life must have been like back in the 40s/50s...

I then remembered this thread, and started to wonder how many of his classic shots he would get away with today...

Apart from the rights of parents (including me) to record key events from their own child's life, I think that it's our duty to defend our right to take broader documentary photos as and when we see fit...

I intend to carry my camera with me most of the time and to challenge / break the emerging norms wherever possible and would urge all other serious photographers to do the same...

As the title of the thread says - What is the world coming to???

ALL TOGETHER NOW: I've had enough and I'm just NOT going to take it any more...
Cheers, John

Just regarding current affairs programs on the commercial networks - remember that they always sensationalise, they pander to the lowest common denominator, they lie by omission or emphasis or straight out, and their only interest is in ratings.

And I am probably being too kind to them.

What I am saying is, be very very careful with these people.

The latest outrage is young children with wealthy parents sporting high resolution digital phone cameras taking covert pictures of of senior citizens for god knows what perverted reasons. Those of us...er...you...who are on the wrong side of 45 should band together and put a stop to this disgusting practice. Lobby your local MP...yes....visit him in your local correctional center on visiting day and protest. You are entitled to shuffle down the footpath..spittle dripping and false teeth slipping...pyjama pants wet with accidental stains...and not be treated like a sex object for the gratification of unbalanced pre-pubituous junior miscreants who are bored with life by age 11. Damn the invention of television!

Interesting to see that the Randwick Council ban on photography at the Des Renford Pool (Heffron park) has been suspended.

Yep - Good to hear... I happened to listen to the Mike Carlton show this morning on the way to work... The council and councillors seem to be backing away from this at a vast rate of knots... No-one is prepared to own up that it was their idea...

I think that the public backlash has surprised them... It might make a few schools (such as BBJ's) think again about their policy too...

Hopefully the momentum of the backlash will continue to rise, to put pressure on those bans already in place, and any potential new bans.

Sadly, that would require something that is in shorter supply than Nikkor glass - common sense on the part of our elected representatives.
