Another lens questionI currently enjoy owning the 50mm 1.4 Nikor lens.
Does anyone see any point in also purchasing the 85mm 1.4 0r 1.8. I of course realise the difference in the focal length and the ability to perhaps isolate individuals, but I thought that cropping in PS would achieve a similar result. Is the 85mm a superior lens in other ways, perhaps? Nige
Re: Another lens question
The 50/1.4 is difference focal lenght with the 85mm/1.4. The 85/1.4 is a perfect lens to isolate individual and nice or better bokeh then the 1.8. If you take photo with the 85mm, you don't need to crop out the unwanted subjects, and crop out in PS never give you the same result as the photo taken by the 85mm. The 85/f.1.4 is tack sharp under any lightinng condition and ideal for real lowlight. I have a series of fast lenses in 1.4 and I never want to use flash with those lenses. Inside Jenolan caves, I like to capture the real colour after the tour guide switched on the hidden colour light bulbs under. Using flash will be washed out all, and I don't need tripod to shoot with all the f.1.4 lenses Birddog114

Nige, I also have a 50 1.4 and 85 1.8. Different lengths and different results. You could get by with just the 50, but it would be getting by compared to having both. The 85 1.4 is just beautiful, the jewel in anyones crown.
