Does this mean Nikon had gapless microlenses first?

I was just having a read of Thom Hogan's site and stumbled across this:

If you look at the sensor filtration for the D700, D3 and D3x you will see that he states that they have 'cont. microlens' which lead me to think that Canon made a huge fuss about introducing this in the 50D. But I was not satisfied with this one reference and had a good trawl and found this official Nikon discussion of the 12MP FX sensor in from the D3:

If you read the last section on the first page, the engineer states that they adopted a 'gap-less' microlens array to help capture light in the periphery of the FX sensor.

Didnt Canon claim that they implemented gapless microlens first, in the Canon EOS 50D???

Not to be a fanboy or anything, I just thought it was strange that there was no talk of this topic in the Nikon D3/D3x/D700. I didnt believe Thom when I read it but now that it is on the Nikon website as well....why wouldnt Nikon have advertised that development if Canon made a big fuss about it??

Yep thesis is still being written.

Canon made a big deal about having gap-less microlenses on the sensor of the EOS 50D. But it appears that the tech appeared first on the Nikon D3 sensor. Microlenses are the tiny lenses that focus the light that hits the photosites on the sensor. Traditionally they had gaps between them, which is generally not an issue (possibly cheaper/easier to produce) but by making them gap-less the amount of wasted light is reduced considerably, increasing low light sensitivity, and according to the NIkon engineer in that interview, it helps capture light in the periphery of the the FX sensor (ie if they weren't there, vignetting would be worse i think).
