Annoying Board Behaviour

Postby ATJ on Sat Oct 10, 2009 10:43 am

This is my experience and may not necessarily be the same for others.

I use Firefox 3.5 as my primary browser. I have it set up so that it will "Show my windows and tabs from last time". If I have Firefox running I will have DSLRUsers in one window on the New Posts page. I have never liked the portal and very rarely use it. I much prefer the New Posts page and the majority of the time - at least until recently - it has worked very well. From time to time I just refresh the window to see new posts.

Recently the "Last visit" feature has been doing weird things. It used to stay pretty stable but now it appears to change at the drop of a hat. This means that if I didn't read all the threads that I wanted between refreshes threads will drop off the list as it will only show threads since my "Last visit". There was a time where "Last visit" got stuck. This was actually really good because I never lost any threads.

In my experience, things have been a lot worse since the board got rated as an "Attack Site". I don't know if this was because I cleared my private data (as was recommended), a change in Firefox 3.5 or it was just coincidental.

As I said above, every time I load Firefox it opens a DLSRUsers window (as well as other sites that I frequently visit). Previously, if I rebooted my PC and relaunched Firefox "Last visit" would not update and all the threads that were there before I rebooted would still be there. Now when I relaunch Firefox, "Last visit" is updated and I only get very recent threads. I don't know if this is a change in Firefox or a change in DSLRUsers or both. I had previously thought that Firefox reloaded from cache - I know it still does that on some other sites, or at least it appears that way. That no longer seems to be the case.

So... to the 2x2 thread. I have been pretty busy during the last week and probably only visited DSLRUsers 2 or 3 times. Over the week I've probably rebooted my PC 5 or 6 times. I suspect what has happened is that the timing of my reboots and the timing of my visits was such that the 2x2 thread (and others now that I look at General Discussion) slipped through.

I guess I'm going to have to change the way I visit the board. I really don't like the portal but I guess I'll have to live with it.

Sorry you missed the 2x2 Andrew. It was a great trip, though I can't say I got many, if any keepers. So far I have only had a quick look.

Yes the board has been behaving badly lately. From other comments made (& other complaints) it seems to be something changed by the Web Service providers to the underlying code & therefore out of Gary's control. I seem to recall he said in one thread, he WON'T be renewing at this host again.

Like you, I use the recent posts &use either 'today' or 'last 24 hours' as appropriate. However, when they give unexpected results (e.g. NO posts in 24 hours), I tend to look harder. However, there seems to be fewer posts than usual. I don't know whether this reflects reality & possibly users' frustration, or whether I am missing posts too.

Exactly, and correct. BH get the benefit of my account for just one year. Probably a little less than a year. I am in no way comfortable with them as the forum hosts. I am in no way comfy with them hosting any of my sites, truth be told.

Andrew, What if you had a shortcut to load 2 days worth of forum posts?

http://www.dslrusers.com/portal/portal_recent_topics.php?mode=lastXdays&amount_days=2

Also make sure FF doesn't remember your cookie from DSLR. Just log-in each time (save your passwords though) you use it.

Would that work?

I had just upgraded to new firefox for the same result (attack site), I think the new version changed the security level!
I opened dslrusers in camino (a mac browser) without a problem, seems to respond better than in FF so moved my book mark over to Camino and every thing is now fine :D
