where can I buy black velvet from?Hi Everyone,
I am looking to get black velvet for a background, I dont have a background stand or anything like that. All i am looking to do is use it maybe on the floor so that a product/model can sit on it. I found this on flea-bay and was wondering if this is the right one to pick up, if not does anyone have a website that i can purchase off. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Velvet-velour-fabric-black-colour-6m-long-x-60_W0QQitemZ350269629639QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Fabric?hash=item518db264c7 Thanks Mak Canonian

Re: where can I buy black velvet from?I have been once, but got confused when I saw that the velvet was all shiny, as I was under the impression that it shouldnt be shiny so that I doesnt reflect light rather it should absorb right... or do I have the worng end of the stick again

Re: where can I buy black velvet from?I was going to suggest Spotlight, too. Failing that, perhaps Alannah Myles could tell you.
Re: where can I buy black velvet from? You need to shop carefully for velvet because quite a few are not true velvet but contain synthetics which will have a shine and reflect light , real velvet is around $50-80 a meter and you have to be very carefull you don't get fluff or lint on it as it become impossible to remove, it does not fold well as is strored in a roll with paper between the layers. However if you have a look there are some cheaper fabrics that will adsorb light, do not crease and are considerably cheaper - I use the rear side of a lightwieght backed satin (spotlight $12 meter) and it does the trick nicely - so have a look . Of course it depends on your purpose but if you just want a flat background and you wont be lightening it , a black bed sheet will probably do the trick.
Can only suggest you take your camera to the shop and take a couple of shots, or buy a small sample first. DebT DebT

Re: where can I buy black velvet from?Hi Mak,
I am shopping for black velvet myself. I have used a 150cm wide fabric from spotlight, sewn together to make a 3m wide x 10m long backdrop. works great for most lighting situations. A client wants a black velvet specifically, so I was planning to get some from Dragon Image, if they have stock (called last year and stock was a problem). http://www.dragonimage.com.au/product.asp?id=1294 At $28 / m it adds up when you get a few meters. Whats your budget? another option if your budget doesnt suit velvet http://imagemelbourne.com.au/store//catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=35&osCsid=61f97f5f7789be009d74813da27f2a24
Re: where can I buy black velvet from?my budget was around the $75 mark as I dont have a backdrop stand so I wasnt looking for something too large.. that said the muslin option is more in my range.
Anyone looking to offload a 2nd hand muslin background?? If not I will see if spotlight has it. Cheers Mak Canonian

Re: where can I buy black velvet from?
When I searched a year ago, fabric shops widest width was 150cm. So if you want wider you need to sew it together (which is what I did). From memory may have been $10 / m. That $85 black muslin from melbourne image could be a go? Before you commit, perhaps give an importer a call, like warwicks fabrics to see if you can get a loom closer to the width you are after.
Re: where can I buy black velvet from?thanks for the info Bruce. Will scout around. I may end up sewing together as a more economical option.
