Roof leak.. argh!

We had a pipe leak upstairs overnight sending water through the ceiling and onto my desk. I just happened to have had the D700 and 20mm lens out for cleaning the night before and they got drenched.

I wiped them down and there doesn't seem to be any issue at the moment. I think it was just a splash of water and not a direct stream so there doesn't seem to be any signs of water ingress but I'm concerened that there may be something I've missed. Worse case scenario would be the camera fails whilst on a job.

To add to the heart ache the water dripped onto my Apple HD Cinema display and has only just stopped streaming out from the USB ports. Epson traditional papers, external hard drives, camera gimbals.. nothing seems to have escaped .

OMG, i hope you have insurance!! and hope you listed your gear, new for old, might be time for a new toy!! and everything else too.

Oh my that is horrible news thankgod the camera is ok if anything you should keep the camera in a bag and buy gel packs to absorb the moisture

As for your computer I hope its insured even though insurance companies will be slow at paying up

That sux man!! Hope you dont permanently loose any gear from this.

If you need any help to fix the water problem, i would be happy to lend a hand, im a carpenter as well as a photographer.

I am insured thank god. Contacted the insurance broker this afternoon and they are organising the claim for me. I just have to get some repair / replacement quotes. Insurance is new for old so on the upside I could end up with replacing the 24" cinema display with a shiny new 30" as that is the only model available in the HD range now.

My biggest concern was the D700 though, but this seems to be ok. Weather sealing on that thing is brilliant but I'll get it checked by Nikon just to be sure!

The office ceiling is beautiful pressed tin and will probably have to be checked for corrosion. Carpet's a goner too.

Thankfully the 3800 printer and computer were tucked away so they were not affected. With your kind comments I'm finding more and more positives .

Great to hear your insured, I am sure its still a real pain but at least you will get all your stuff replaced, eventually!

Sorry to hear of this problem.

While it's a real pain to see your gear damaged, the real hassle comes when you have to get it all fixed or replaced. That becomes a very solid interruption to your life, what with arranging for the repairs etc.

Hopefully everything will be handled without too much disruption.

Thanks guys, the broker is organising everything so I can get on with work. Hooked up our backup monitor and now we're back in business.

The I.T. guys handling the quote indicated both monitors would be a write off so hopefully we'll have two new 30" HD's on their way shortly.

I'll be taking the camera in for checkup tomorrow but it seems to be fine so more of a precaution at this stage.

The big bonus is that we would have had a client's thermal imaging camera in the office had they not rescheduled. That equipment would not have been covered by our insurance and replacement would have been around $100k not to mention the weeks of downtime required to repair or setup a new one. Breathing a BIG sigh of relief on that one!

Reminds me, one of the guys made an emergency landing in a primary school last week after his engine cut out. It was a new R22 that had just been flown down from Queensland. He's a great pilot and thankfully both he and his passenger walked away unscathed. I think I told him exactly the same thing... go and buy a lotto ticket!
