ISO FIX - ISO info in EXIF headers on D70

some of you probably know of this one already ....

well, image fix. Source of problem remains.

The problem : nikon stores the ISo information in EXIF as "sensitivity" or some such non standard paramater ... so software such as windows XP, Photoshop (before CS with NEF plugin.), gallery, and practically every non-nikon software, omits the ISO speed when reporting EXIF data.

install this, then copy the "isofix.exe" that gets installed over to your image directory and run it. It goes through your jpegs, re-writes the "sensitivty" field to be "ISO SPEED" so that mainstream applications / web site software will properly dispaly the EXIF headers.

It'd be nice if nikon actually changed the paramater on the camera itself to avoid this extra step in post-processing. (assuming its important to you.)

yep ive tried it and it works.

It only modifies the data for ISO in the EXIF so that non-nikon software will read ISO correctly. Keeps all other exif data intact including capture time.)

exif data is displayed under each photo in the following URL's (my site auto extracts the exif data, tho im sure you knew taht )

darb, what is the actual workflow, so to speak. Is it necessary to put all files in the ISO fix directory for processing first before moving them to wherever they will end up?

If you know what I mean - the program only appears to work on files in it's own directory.

This program's awesome! Thanks for the letting us know darb.

I installed it, had to fetch the .net framework thing from MS website (23Mb) but it's all fine and dandy once installed. What I did was copy/paste the 8kb ISOfix file from the folder it installs in to the folder with D70 images. Then run the program in the images folder and wait till it's done. Cut/paste ISOfix to another folder of images and repeat. I'm sure there's a more elegant way of using it.

as above, though i just realised that after you install it, theres a new "right click" function on all folders.

Ie, go to your folder where you havef images, right click and choose "isofix"

THis means you dont have to copy all your images into the directoryt that has the executable, or copy the executable into your images dir etc ... no need.

I am the author of "ISOFix" for the Nikon D70, here is a complete description I wrote for dpreview.com, where it was origianlly posted...

OK, Here is my fix for the EXIF ISO "bug". Nikon hides the ISO setting in the EXIF "MakerNotes" field. This program pulls it out of there and copies it to the standard EXIF ISO field. This makes the ISO setting viewable in PhotoShop and other programs that can't properly decode the Nikon MakerNote field. Works on images shot in JPG and images shot in NEF and converted with Nikon Capture or Nikon Browser / Nikon View.

To install, unzip all files to a temporary folder and run setup.exe. To use, right-click on a folder name and select "ISO Fix". The application will attempt to correct all JPGs in the folder.

Warnings/Disclaimers:

1. NO GUARANTEES! All I can promise is that it works for me and my US version D70 with firmware A=1.00, B=1.01. I shoot in NEF and convert to JPG using Nikon Capture.

2. It doesn't work on TIF or NEF files. Works ONLY on images shoot in NEF and converted to JPG using Nikon software, or images shot in JPG.

3. It replaces the original images. If you don't trust me (and you have no reason to!), please make sure you have backups before using this!

4. Runs only on Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows XP, and Windows NT with SP6a.

5. It requires the Microsoft dotNet framework V1.1. If you don't already have it, you will be advised during installation to download from MS.

I hope others find it useful. Please respond with your experiences.

Hi Wilbur, I'll post it up on my website and link it here tomorrow - as the file is on my lappy and I left that at the office.

I remember the D2H behaved like the D70 at launch with non standard ISO tags, but a firmware update fixed it for the D2H but Nikon couldn't extend the same courtesy to D70 users.

Such so simple and almost expected element of a standard ISO tag, Nikon couldn't deliver without 3rd party software intervention... I can see how successful this encrypted WB thing will be for them.
