Sounds a little odd to me.... why go through all that trouble when you should insure your camera gear in the first place...

There's no reason why he couldn't have done it. So long as you clean the saltwater off the lenses they are very much recoverable. I've salvaged electronic circuit boards that have been swamped in seawater but washing thoroughly in warm soapy water, then rinsed very thoroughly, applied electrolube and CO contact cleaner and 'cooked' at about 40-50 degs in the oven and they worked fine. I imagine lenses would be easier than all that, so long as you're careful to not scratch the glass.

I find the microwave is quicker and easier, although you do have to make sure every last bit of salt is off the circuit!

I'd never use a micowave for that purpose. I would hate to think what all that highly mobile energy is doing to delicate circuitry. :)

Killa,

"Electrolube"! You're in the navy aren't you? Maybe some interrogation section? Does electrolube have anything to do with batteries & genitals?

Don't forget the 'sump oil and funnel'. :)
