Buying my first camera!

Hi y'all!
Have just joined the D70 site, as I'm in love with the D70 I use at work, and want my own for any freelance photos that may come my way (family portraits, maybe weddings, and of course for my own family use).
I've priced a D70S at Harvey Norman for $1999 (including either an 18-70 Nikon lens or a 18-200 tamron lens).
Is this good? I'm used to using the Nikon lens at work, but is the Tamron better?
I know I could get it cheaper on eBay etc, but need the 24-months interest free option.
Do any other places offer better deals interest-free, and do I have any bargining power?
Also, I'm lusting after the SB-800 flash, but put off by $850 price tag..... Any suggestions?

Try to chop it down to $1800.00 and it's the current price.
No such of real interest free and nothing free on this world.
Finally, go for the 18-70 kit lens instead of the Tamron.

The price is too much, go with the Nikkor 18-70, and make sure it's the Nikkor.

it comes with the nikkor 18-70 and 70-300 and is only $30 more than the Harvey Norman price, there are similar sites with the same deal going,
i recently purchased the D50 from ccccamerahouse in Bondi

and they had a twin lens kit with the D70 for approx $1900-not sure what telephoto lens was in the deal- i think it was a tamron lens

dont like your chances in getting a better price with an interest free deal, places like Harvey Norman and Domayne usually wont bargain down,especially with those long 4 year interest free deals, they would only give me $75 off a D50 twin lens kit, and i was paying cash!!

You're right, they don't/won't bargain on the interest free terms. We normally make the deal first, then inform them we want it on the interest free terms.......and if the salesperson wants the sale enough he will cave. Although we did have one tell us it was going to cost him money because he didn't realise the price he gave us included the interest free period......yeah right!

Go the 18-70 route like all have advised, and enjoy.

Thanks for all of your help guys, much appreciated. I'll get onto that new camera house website Albey, and will try be a formidable customer, and practice my poker-face bargaining skills in prep for Harvey Norman!
Also, does anyone have any more info on SB 800 vs SB 600? I use the 800 at work, but not sure if I need that scale (and price) for personal camera...
Does anyone use a SB-600? Are they any good?

Hello Sky. Weclome to the forum.

I'm sure you will find lots of good advice here.

In terms of choosing a flash, you will find most members of the forum have the SB800 and seem very happy with it. I have the SB600 (only for a few weeks now) and think it is great - though I am still learning! It is slightly less powerful than the 800 and has a few less features (notably that it can't be used as a master flash to drive other slave flashes) but for me these features were not really important anyway and the cheaper price was very attractive!

Welcome to forum D70, go with the kit lens, it is a marvellous little fella, as far as interest free goes, there's no such thing as a free lunch and usually Hardly Normal won't budge, but if you've got cash or credit card, they have heaps up their sleeves, just talk tough.
