Should I upgrade from Photoshop 6.01 if so then to what?Should I upgrade from Photoshop 6.01 if so then to what?
Should I upgrade to the latest version? or should I change to something else totally like Nikon Capture? Is there a trial version available for Capture? And what is the difference between Photoshop, Photoshop CS and Photshop Elements? Your thoughts are very welcome. Last edited by ipv6ready on Sat May 28, 2005 11:28 pm, edited 1 time in total.

I got a trial version of Nikon Capture with my D70. I think there may be one available for download on the Nikon site.
I use both NC and PS CS for different things, but I find that CS2 has many things that Capture doesn't.

Nikon capture will take over your computer if you try and use another raw converter.......

Can you describe "take over your computer" I only use NEF? So I guess this is relevent. I am actually thinking - leaning towards Capture as I am planning a upgrade of my D100 later in the year when the D2x is a little less newand cheaper. I read here that WB is encryted on d2x. I'm back
D3s D700 D200, SB-900, SB-800 x2, SB-600 x4
The D2x won't be getting all that cheaper, if any at all, this year.

Re: Should I upgrade from Photoshop 6.01 if so then to what?
Certainly is, yes. It's a fairly hefty download though (20 or 30-odd MB IIRC) from the Nikon Asia website.
Yes I agree. But by end of the year I will need a new body. I can always hope. Even if it went down $1000 it will be like getting a free plane ticket and customs. I'm back

It won't be going down that much until a replacement is at least announced or a 12mp+ competitor similarly priced is announced.
The likelihood of either of those happening this year is incredibly slim. However, back on topic people... Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

When you open a raw image in say PSCS the computer will go to nikon capture as a default, rather than photoshop raw, and it is hard to remove, it embeds itself. cheers bp Last edited by big pix on Sun May 29, 2005 11:54 am, edited 1 time in total.

I was wondering why my PS raw had changed to a useless one. So once it has embedded itself, how DO we get rid of it without removing NC?
As for which PS to uprgrade to, it depends on how old your computer is and how much RAM you have. If you have a newer PC (P4 or equiv) and plenty of RAM then go for the newest you can afford If you have an older PC then perhaps you might be able to pick up PS7 somewhere going cheap. Steve.

NC places its file in the ..\Adobe Photshop Only\File Formats directory (From memory) Get rid of it (or change the extension) and all will be well. If it's not there, it's not far away, do a search for .8bi files and you'll find it. The Adobe plug in goes in the ..\Plug Ins\File Formats\Camera_Raw_2_4 directory, but CS seems to use the Photoshop Only location first. Cheers What's another word for "thesaurus"?
Photoshop RAW converter is a very powerful part of PSCS, Russell Brown is an Adobe expert, so have a look at what RAW can do when used as designed......... once you have used RAW in PSCS in advanced mode it will be hard to change, I think it gives the photographer total control over how the images will look, along with 'saving as' so you can return to reprocess.

is photoshop cs2 just a newer version of photoshop 7?
perhaps a more powerful version? photoshop7 and cs2 ..do they have similar looking interfaces? i have 5.0 and am really confortable with it so in look and layout i dont want something that seems like a different program and does ps7 read .RAW files? i think i read it does once you update it
Shockadelica, PS has had a very similar interface throughout. You should find it familiar. The big difference has been in the tools and the underlying technology - better with each version. The difference between PS5 and PS7 is fairly substantial (don't ask me to quote the differences - it has been a while since I have used either).
Adobe had a raw convertor for PS7 (USD99 add on), but I doubt that it would handle D70 NEF files if still available. I would suggest NC or Bibble Pro (which has a PS plugin) if you go with PS7. Cheers Matt
Actually CS2 is a more powerful version of Photoshop CS (which was in effect version 8. See here for the main differences between CS & CS2... They are all very similar, but CS2 has a lot more features in the Raw Processing stage. Not sure about 7, but CS & CS2 definitely do... Cheers, John

looks impressive,
also expensive thanks for explaining to me the difference about the versions now just have to think do i want a great tripod setup or this
Shockadelica,
I'm not sure what system you are running, but unless it is a fairly recent one, you may have to factor in some system upgrades into the picture if you go to CS2. PS7 should be fine on most systems from even several years ago. Julian
hey thanks again
good thinking matt k i'll see the price difference on the 2 versions and go from there if i do get photoshop 7 is the 'upgrade' or whatever its called meaning the thing that will let me work with .RAW files .....is it for free? and downloadable over the internet? my pc is a pentium 4, 2.00 GHz with 512mb ram its about 2 or so years old hoping this will do me
