There used be an artist who performed at the Hunters Hill Hotel who did nothing but Tom Waits and he was very good - again Tom Waits is a favourite of mine.

Tom Waits is also a passable actor

Well I'm not a guitarist as such.................a bass player! 4 strings are better than 6 right??!! Haven't played for a few years now, after many a year of non-descript gigs on the Sydney circuit. Garage rock/60s punk was my cup of tea. Still is. I was a Mod for quite a while too, buzzing around Sydney on my beautiful Lambretta!

Leo Kottke is fantastic. Recommend the album Standing In My Shoes. World Turning is one of those tracks that really gets you going, a fine example of Leo doing his thing.

I was lucky enough to see Tom Waits live at the Palais in St Kilda in 1979 I think it was (give or take a year). Tom and I were younger then.

Tom was nicely lubricated, the audience was bent as a maggot. That was one fantastic show. Tom's equipment had gone to Brisbane, so he was winging it with a borrowed grand. At one stage, the piano played up, without missing a beat, Tom looked underneath and grumbled something about this sucker's done its clutch. The audience was spellbound, he talked, he sang, he owned that stage. A masterful performance, and the second best concert I have ever seen

It was Talking Heads in their Stop Making Sense tour, 1984. There is a DVD - well worth seeing if you can. A truly amazing experience, started with David Byrne by himself , and they gradually constructed the set over 3 or 4 songs with the band increasing in number (way beyond the 4 core members) until the whole thing just went off. See the DVD, you won't be sorry.

Oh yeah, the support act was The Pretenders!! I shit you not. They would have been worth the price of admission alone

What a night.

Nice,

I had a love affair with Punk in the eighties, one band I most recently found and love is the Stranglers (they seem like 60s punk I think?). Golden Brown is one of those perfectly composed ditties that draws wonderful circles in my brain. The nineties I started really getting into the toasters, English Beat, the Specials etc. But my mainstay as a teenager was Nomeansno (for revolutionary groundbreaking bass fueled hardcore, nothing is more dark and more beautiful than their music and thoughtful lyrics), DOA, SNFU, Dead Kennedies, Minor Threat, Youth Brigade, the Ramones, Pointed Sticks, I could go on and on. Love the Talking Heads though. The eighties were a great time for rock. With the Ramones and Deadkennedies, you also had the Talking Heads, Oingo Boingo, and Devo etc. So ecclectic.

I looked into seeing Leo Kotke recently in Seattle and he wanted over 300 of my hardearned greenbacks. I politely and respectfully declined.

Edited:

Can't forget about Dick Dale and the Deltones. I can play miserloe Taco wagon and Hava Nageela to the T (even with my own little spin). People love the double pick. To impress I throw those songs out there and it really wows them.

I leave my favourite thread for a few days and it goes into stellar drive. 'Small change got wasted with his own 38' ' The piano has been drinking ... not me' Need I say more. Tom Waits is one of those things you put on in ISO1600 territory just before Leonard Cohen. Both have unique musical talents. Without a global musical market I wonder if they would have ever been economically viable as musicians.

Lets get this back into photo territory!

When photographing these desperados, the last thing you would want to do would be to set off an SB800 in their face in a smoky bar, you might get wasted yourself. Assuming we are using the one and only D70 what equipment do we need to photograph a musician in a musical event. There are obviously many venue types but here's an example. I was at business breakfast the other day and the 'official' photographer came up to the speaker at the podium and with a prosumer (think it was Canonish) held it above his head and looking intently at the LCD, while less than a metre from the speaker proceeded to take shot after shot (with flash!) into the speakers face. I was thinking NO, NO, NO there is a better way surely.

Any comments?

Dargan,

It's little different from when I'm shooting in bars, really. High contrast, often with reduced scope for true creativity.

Dial in a high ISO, or mount your 50mm 1.4.

While your comment about flash is noted, stepping back a foot or four, pulling the kit lens to 80, and dialling down the flash by 0.7 - 1.3 stops produces very acceptable results, and without being right in the face of the speaker or performer.

And if you truly want to get in their face (like this), the 24-120 VR is amazing ...

When I delve into Jimmy Paige it is like a starving man devouring the heart of a Watermelon. His music is so bluesy and thick and accessible, I almost forgot about anything else I played and learned. No funny cigarettes, just taking breaks from the video games.

I don't rember them well but I have some great glimses back in time to the Filmore East in New York were I first saw Jethro Tull, Lead Zeplin, Jimmy Hendrix and countless other. I also have found relections of a very muddy weekend spent at a little farming town in upper New York in 1969 :D
Manny are gone but "Slow Hand" is still around and not doing covers of past glory :( I've follower him since John Mayall.
If I gave up my music collection or even stoped adding to it I could look at a VR a lot sooner  But you need to do something to feed the soul on a rainy day :)
Dooda,
Between his guitar and Plant's voice. 3 rd row center watching Paige play the guitar or his lap with a bow sounded almost like a slide without the medal twang. Not a player so may have been a gimic but I have yet to hear anything like it.

Due to an accident of birth, I wasn't able to attend that concert, but while I was living in Modesto I met some people who did, and it was quite something for me to just listen to them talk about it.

One thing that does piss me off is that here in Oz we're so far away from the rest of the world, and we don't get to see all the great artisits because it is such an effort for them to visit these shores. Hell, I was able to see Robben Ford twice within a month while living in Modesto; once at the SF Blues Festival, and then a week or so later, when he came to Modsesto.

And I've seen Jimmy Smith in Long Beach )here's never been here, to my knowledge), Joey Di Francesco in Dallas (playing piano even) and, also in Dallas (with the DSO) Ray Charles.

We were in a box overlooking the stage, and could even see the notes on the charts Ray was using that night.

Manny are gone but "Slow Hand" is still around and not doing covers of past glory :( I've follower him since John Mayall.

Do you have the Scorses Blues DVD set? If not, get it; it's well worthwhile. I was telling Vicareyus about it last night at the dinner, as it happens. While they're all great movies, the Mike Figgis movie is the one that will blow you away

The greatest concert I've been to in the last few years was in Houston, they all make it to Houston. anyway in one week I saw Koko Taylor(lung power) and Dick Dale (pick power) and the Deltones. They both have this inward presence that connects with people. What a week it was!

Edited by me

They weren't playing together, just within the same week, thought I'd clarify because I'm pretty cure KOKO Taylor and Dick Dale wouldn't mesh really well.

My wife is a health professional. I think we have to stop this thread or we will all discover that we are all related.

Gidday all,

Was in IT but gave it up for farming (for my sanity) and fishing (for leisure). I like to be outdoors. I used to fly but not anymore. Seriously considering ultralights for fun... or a quick way to die!

I do not play the guitar, but I am constantly taking photos of guys who do... does that count for anything? I have become the official photographer for a local band. They play, I shoot. They must get sick of the SB800.

Cheers

Hi,

my wife used to be a nurse, now she is a Clinical Nurse Consultant.
I used to be in the in the repro photographic industry.
I did 9 months of service as a ambulance person for the German Red Cross.
I got into IT in 1983.
Now I am the Systems Manager for an Area Health Service.
Isn't that spooky ?

Wow! That is indeed interesting Christiand

You can see how the health aspect is a common thread throughout your and your wife's careers.

I wonder what the common ambulance callouts would be in Germany and whether the common callouts would be different here.

eg: Frostbite versus sunburn would be one difference I expect

Schnapps overdoses versus Coopers overdoses :D

Cheers

funniest call out ...

Postby christiand on Fri Dec 17, 2004 10:32 pm

Hi bago100,

the funniest call out I had was an elderly lady who had a goat that head butted her in the back while she was picking fruit; she was very sore.
This lady was speaking the local village dialect, that I didn't understand because I was from a different part of Germany.
So I decided to reply using MY local dialect from a different part of Germany and she looked at me bewildered; and I thought: tit for tat.
Hard to communicate, but a lot of fun.

Cheers

Hmmm, let's see.

Brass.
Played semi-professionally.
Played in an amatuer Orchestra.
Played in two amatuer Concert Bands.
Played in several brass bands in three different states.
Played in the MSO (Melb Symph Orch) 6 times as a junior guest.
Played at the Melb concert hall on opening day. (with MSO)
Played in a pub to 6 people.
Played in Japan to 12000 people. (Got a great story about that one, me and a didgeridoo. Ask me sometime.)
Played on the back of a float in a potato festival.
Played for Queen Beatrice of The Netherlands on her last visit to Aust as part of a Dutch Folk band.

Keyboard and/or Guitar
Rock band playing Dyvinals, Chrissie Amphlett stuff etc. (Female lead singer)
Punk rock band playing, er basically crap.
AussieFolk band doing mostly covers of Redgum, Slim Dusty etc.

That about covers it. I don't play any longer. I think it was a fifteen year phase i was going through. :)
