How do i convince someone to buy a D70s?

Hi guys

my associate Catherine decided to go with Nikon. Her decision revolved around total cost of ownership Nikon being more bang for buck than canon in the long run. She intends to buy a few long lenses.
She also misinterpreted the duty free price for the canon 20D
She thought the 20D cost $1500 where in fact the salesperson was showing her the 350D.

Unfortunately she is adamant about buying the D70s from a retail source.
but later she may be interested in purchasing lenses from the one and only birddog.

That what my thought! 20D + kit lens for $1500.00? I'll buy two and I can make $500.00/ each.
Wherever she buys she'll get her happy from it, for a beginners like her + her attitudes, I better not get involved with cos it'll take lot of my times and my times are monies reserved for my lusts.
Please don't take this as an offence, those ignorance people hard to work with, IMHO. and I'm not the shop to sell photography gears.

I've looked at Adorama and B&H for big telephoto lenses and I can tell you now there isn't much in price variation between 400MM F2.8, 500MM F4 and 600MM F4. A few hundred dollars most times, and it was mostly the Canons being cheaper.

But guess what, Canon has IS!

I've contemplated changing over to Canon recently but the cost of doing it would damage me.

Loyalty means nuttin if your brand doesnt produce what you want/need and you've convinced yourself that you really need it.

Nikon ARE behind in the area of super-tele's when it comes to features. Not to mention USM in every lens and IS in most compared to Nikons's relatively paltry offerings in that regard (though improving slowly). Dont know with regards to sharpness etc in the super-tele's though, Id imagine both the big names on on a fairly even footing there.

This is great to hear! Im sure she will be very pleased with it and wont regret your advice! I had a mate recently buy a 350XT, as much as I wanted to, I didnt suggest the Nikon as he seemed to have his heart set on the Canon and its not worth a friendship over something silly like that. Having said that, he's already bitching about the kit lens and that the D70's kit lens being better (plus that he needs to upgrade to a similar 2.8 - lens lust strikes again)

A lot of people feel more comfortable buying retail, they feel they have better warranty protection etc, though I think Birdy has managed to organise that that people still have local warranty etc(?). I guess that probably wouldnt apply through to NZ unfortunately

As always, two way for people buying gears:
- Grey imported goods
- Local
I do carry both two above areas, grey imported with local warranty return to me in case something goes wrong, therefore in comparison with pricing direct on eBay or other O/S sellers/ suppliers, pricing are little bit more than people found on some items but not all, cos incase something goes wrong, I have the funds to cover the shipping charges back to our suppliers and they're costly.

Imagine this yourself: to send an small box ( a 50/1.4 or 1.8 lens) to HKG, weight 500gm by EMS/ Global Express cost me AU$45.00/ each.
To the US, it cost me AU$55.00

People can buy direct from HKS or other sources but they have to pay the cost for returned items in case.

Just a service I provide to this board, don't count in my time doing all the tracking the order once it left HKG until it reaches your hand, part from it, Customs matters related, follow up with suppliers etc...

Fortunately, I have the link with local disti. so people can go back to Nikon/ Maxwell to claims for service if required and/ or if they agreed to buy or happy with the big difference pricing with grey imported stuff.

For NZ, NZealander can also return to me for warranty services or straight to Maxwell Local Service Center for warranty service, cos Maxwell is the Sole Distributor of Nikon products in Australia & New Zealand.

My work place just bought a 20D for science purposes. Gonna use it to take some burns. We didnt buy a D70 because of the fact that it doesnt support TTL flash with the macro speedlight.

I had a little play with it and all I can say is that it doesnt have the same ergonomics as the D70. The two command dials are located in the wrong area! The ON switch is near the LCD display along with a command dial that controls FV comp, aperature/ shutter. Changing those settings are quite easy, but not as good as the D70.

Changing the metering is impossible. The metering button is near the shutter release button which also doubles as the FV comp button. Since it has a dual function, to change from matrix to centre weight metering you need to press that button and rotate the command dial located above metering/FV comp button. Very uncomfortable to change. And did I mention no spot metering?

The camera gives a sonic boom when taking shots. At least 8 times louder than the D70 shutter system.
