Raydar, the French site is the epitome of what I was thinking. That is what I reckon we should do.

Sorry to nitpick Genji, but maybe you want to drop the D70 bit so that D50, D100, D2x and Canon players can play along too... Let's not be brandist...

And whilst on the topic of how good the French site is, how about their colour scheme? I find it quite pleasant and very nikony (have I invented a new word?)

I agree go for the Exercices de Style.

Dave,

Good questions ...

Aussie Dave wrote:The only thing I'm confused about, from your post above is where you say "they can be completed at no fixed time", however you have suggested a schedule of how the exercises could be run throughout the course of the month - with day 6 - 15 as the period to upload images to server.
Could you perhaps explain what you mean by this ?

Sure. I'm proposing two entirely different streams here.

Stream one would be a tutorial based one, with fixed, formal exercises that need to be completed. These would probably mostly be technically oriented, and each would aim to help one master a particular aspect of photography, be it (for instance) depth of field, exposure measurement, pp techniques, whatever.

These would be done at no fixed pace, as and when a person wants to; they would be a (or a bunch of) permanent ongoing class(es) of one, in a manner of speaking.

Stream two would be what we're currently referring to as the mini challenges, and I'll come to Sheetshooter's point in a moment.

These mini challenges would be set as per the timetable I've outlined (or, whatever ends up being agreed to, actually) and would be held one per month, with participation open to all who wished.

But these two streams would be very separate in concept and outcomes.

Hopefully that will clarify for you what I'm thinking about at the moment, but please let me know if it hasn't.

My take on these 2 different challenges/exercises/whatever you want to call them, is:

Mini-challenge:
A way to get people out and about, taking photos - basically offering up a topic or idea so people can have a predetermined idea on what they are going out to photograph... These are not judged and there are no winners/losers. Perhaps the word "Challenge" should be replaced with something that sounds less competitive....but I'm not sure what ??

Exercises/Tutorials:
This would be an area where everyone can experiment and learn "specific" areas of photography/digital photography to enhance their craft (ie. using DOF effectively, Understanding how to use ISO levels, Exposure Compensation and it's affects on an image, Flash photography, etc etc...)

It seems to me as if we're basically on the same page, with the underlying proviso that what you have here under Exercises/Tutorials is run under an open rotation, on an as and when needed by a participant basis.

Hopefully I'm making some sense here.

Sheetshooter wrote:If I may state a personal observation: I have never liked the notion of 'WINNERS' including when I was a school kid and would win the monthly comp at Waverley Camera Club. The concept of 'winning' with a photograph is totally alien to me and is akin to being the world champion meditator or reader. It just doesn't mean anything worthwhile - a bit of kudos perhaps and the acclaim of your peers for a moment, but beyond that ... WHAT?

I agree completely.

The idea of a series of learning exercises is a ripper in my eyes. But it certainly does not have room for 'winning' and perhaps the first thing that should go is the word 'CHALLENGE'.

I think that maybe depends upon the meaning that you might ascribe to the word "challenge".

I like to think of it as a photographic challenge - a task that is set that one has to try to master - and in that context, I don't have too much of an issue with it.

That said, I remain open to suggestions of a more appropriate name ...

Stream one "Exersises/Tutorials" is most interesting for me. At the same time I'm not rejecting steam two and might participate from time to time :)

Thanks for the explanation Gary....that's pretty much spot on to my way of thinking also.

I'm happy to second the motion if needbe :)

Way back when, we had "An Image A Day For 31 Days"

http://www.d70users.com/viewtopic.php?t=354

I made it through about 10 days, bloody near killed me.

I know, this is not what we are discussing, but it is vaguely related and slightly interesting.

Greg,

Thanx for reminding us of this; it's most timely.

Ok let's cut all the bullshit and start a theme.

Those who want to enter can those who don't want to can watch from the sidelines.

Its not one image a day for 31 days, so its not going to kill anyone.

Make it once a month if you want but lets just bloody do it.
