I have had a very small insight into what our poor Admins Gary and Leigh have had to put up with over the last few days, nothing short of sheer frustration and annoyance! Can I please say a massive thanks to these guys for the perserverance in dealing with GoDaddy, sounds like it's been a massive PITA. Welcome back for however long. Now...dreamhost? Exetel? :)

Talk about frust-bloody-stration.

As a DP professional, I've often worked with people who should never be let near the programming end of a computer system. Clearly, some of those people have found jobs at GoDaddy.

There are a number of people to whom I have, in the past, recommended GoDaddy's services.

While their registry services seem to remain very good and very price effective, after this weekenmd's (lack of) effort on their part, I will no longer be recommending their hosting (non)service.

Further, I will be actively discouraging others from becoming a hosting service client of their's.

My experiences with them this weekend, with 6 calls to the USA, has been nothing short of disgraceful. I wouldn't put my worst enemy through the absence of commitment to customer services that I've experienced this weekend.

We are now actively seeking new hosts.

:(

Scott,

The major issue is simply the size of the database. Depending upon how I wxport it, the message text table, on its own, is in excess of 40MB (min), but might be three times that size if you export it as a full SQL script.

You can take some shortcuts in how you export the script, but that creates issues when you're uploading, as the file/packet/query size cannot be too big.

There's about 8 tables in total that become large enough to be affected by this, and they require a fair bit of hand-holding in order to get them loaded.

But the tools available at DreamHost to help this process along are far better than those at NoDaddy, which only provides PHPMyAdmin. While that's ok, I am able to connect directly from my desktop to the SQL here, and could, if I wanted, backup the database directly to my server. That's nice, and there seem to be a few other niceties there as well.

FWIW and regarding the problems we experienced, here's a part of a note from NoDaddy that I recieved this morning.

The issue with your MySQL database was resolved this morning at approximately 9:30 am Mountain Standard Time. We note that you are already aware of this as you have posted to your site at 3:12 am and we spoke at 1:30am your time.

The issue was caused by a deployment and was rolled back, but there was an issue remaining on the server your database resides on. This has since been corrected with the information we provided to our development team.

Hi Gary.

Regarding backing up the php DB, how effective in your opinion is the backup from within the admin panel of phpbb? Is that easy to restore from?

Regards,
Owen.

GoDaddy sux - and I've never even heard of them.

There would be nothing worse, when running a community service site such as this (for no monetary reward or profit), than having to deal with a bunch of f***wits who can't tell shit from clay.

There - I've got that out of my system. Perhaps I was egged on by the double frustration of having my D70 in hospital with dreaded BGLOD, together with not being able to access this site over the weekend.

Thank God for Bathurst yesterday! :D

I've not used it for a restore, but in doing backups I've seen - at least on Ho-Daddy - some timeout issues, at least with our database. In this case, size does matter.

One other issue with this is that it only deals with the basic phpbb installation. We have quite a few mods installed, and on top of that I've made a few other custom change that hve added even more tables to the database; none of those would be handled by the standard routines.

While that's not difficult to overcome - the code in question is easy to alter - it does become a consideration.

Speaking of which (well sortof), and not wanting to hijack this thread - have we got any update on happenings around the a1gp in sydney yet? You may want to start a new thread with the answer, or put it on the existing thread a1gp (if you can find it!) ;)

I gotta also thank you heaps guys for your efforts - not just this weekend, but always - you have built something really special, which I'm sure you are only too aware of :)

Well myself and Gladys are 100% confirmed as going, probably my Dad and maybe two French visitors (they're going to be pretty happy if the French keep up their form from this weekend).

Thank goodness I was away for most of this weekend! Glad it's situation normal again, thanks Gary for your tireless work on the matter! :)

Not as yet. I should see what (if anything) I can disarrange. :)
