After hearing of a few online photo comps at last weekends mini-meet, I was wondering what you all thought of us having a Sticky thread listing online photo competitions... basically I one stop shop for those that want to enter their photo's into competitions.

Many have weekly or monthly competitions, so we could (if we had enough) divide them into categories...

What do people think ? While I was at uni I lived of my gf/wife's (the one and the same) wage and prizes won from entering compeitions, so it can be quiet worthwhile.

I think while what you suggest has it's merits, we already have a couple of sections which would suffice (IMHO)...
- Shooting and Meeting Ideas (for the one-off comps perhaps)
- Important Links (for the more regular comps and other sites)

There's been a bit of a move to reduce the number of main forum headings lately - seems that most posts end up in either the Image Reviews section or the General Discussion. Not sure if adding another section would change anything

OK - I just re-read your post. Your suggestion was a sticky thread! (not a new section) Must read posts fully a couple of times before responding!

Again, while it's not a bad idea, stickies tend to get very full - and therefore info gets lost somewhere in all the detail/noise

I still think that the two sections we have serve the purpose you're looking for.

Anyone else with ideas?

Like Birddog has sticky threads in Bargins.. have this in one of the sections (which ever was deemed most relevant).

I've not been here long, but the quality of some photo's shared here, completely eclipses some of the competition winning entries, for these comps.

The events section, or for local comps, one of the regional sections might also suffice.

The problem with a sticky is that, for it to work properly, somebody has to edit the primary message, because that's where the notification would need to reside.

That would probably also mean that as comps close, those notifications would be removed, and thus we would lose the true history of the postings.

I think it's far better to simply post a notification in an appropriate section, because that permits the message to be retained for historical purposes, and it also pretty much guarantees the message - with its own thread - obtains the greatest possible exposure within the community.

I think the Today Show comp thread is a perfect example, whereby it's still alive in excess of a week after the thread first started.

One final thought - I think that many comps around the place are somewhat political, and there is no way for you, as an entrant, to fully understand the politics behind the competition judges' motivation; that makes entry submission more of a lottery than a test of photographic skills.

Enter our challenges and be sure of a satisfactory outcome.
