I’m very impressed with his comparison in between two flagship models:

And this is his second last to his review:

“Weaknesses? Well none that were really engineered into the camera, but the EOS-1Ds Mark II is a very unforgiving camera when it comes to lenses. That ultra high resolution and full size 35 mm sensor mean that not only does the camera use all of the glass in a lens but it can reproduce it in minute detail, warts and all. A direct A-B comparison with a cropped sensor camera (such as the Nikon D2X) soon demonstrates that you really have to be careful selecting your lens and stopping it down sufficiently so as to avoid soft corners. You'll also have to (generally speaking) spend more on your lenses than you would for a cropped sensor camera.”

“So this brings us to our conclusion, surprisingly it wasn't as straightforward as you may think. In my opinion both the EOS-1Ds Mark II iand D2X represent the ultimate in current digital SLR technology. The EOS-1Ds Mark II's problem however is its big price tag. In our review of the Nikon D2X we clearly demonstrated that it is more than a match for the EOS-1Ds despite a deficit of 4.4 megapixels. So if you're building an entire new system the D2X will be an attractive proposition.”

Thanks for the link Heath, it will make for some interesting reading once I am all organised and have time to fully take it all in.

I must say that price was the stumbling block for me to a certain extent. I needede 36x24 sensor size for my wide-angle work so the EOS 5D met that neede at $7,000.00 less in price. Think about it, the price differential would allow the purchase of a D2x as a 'second-body' if that was one's desire.

One thing I am about to go and read up on is the in-camera sharpening and whether it affects the image in RAW shooting. I had been advised aginst in-camera sharpening but Askey's results seem quite alright.

Mind you it took him a long time to post that review. I wonder how long before we see a full test of the EOS 5D from him.

Perhaps he hesitated to post the truth of the Canon 1Ds MKII against the D2x, he's one of the Canon fans and finally he did

I found Askey's review of the D2x very informative, deep and well balanced back when I was making my mind up. I doubt he has the same level of bias as MR at LuLa for example.

I think that the term unbiased is one of those misused words. To some extent we are all biased in our opinions, is that not what opinions really are? Our own biased viewpoint

Yes, I read it also and after his review of the D2x on his site, he got few disappointments from his Canon camp at that time.

With this new review of the Canon 1Ds MKII, it made him harder to post what he had on his hand. This took awhile since the 1Ds MKII released.

The two flagship models were released around Nov or Dec 2004.

The D2x released last Dec. 04 and he had his review on last June 2005, and the 1Ds MKII was released in the same time frame but took him longer.

Yes the point of his review in the end was buy the Canon if money is no object... But for value go the nikon...

Once again direct comparisms are difficult, they are very different cameras...

This make me hesitate in buying my extra toy of the Canon 5D atm.

I need to play with my buddy's 5D and learn prior to venture into this camp.

It's happened and number of unhappy Canon shooters with his review of the 1Ds MKII.

It seems to me lot of flame and war now between Canonian and Phil Askey on DPR.

People hate him with this:

It is dissapointing that hate has to be part of this, such a strong word. I admit I do have a nikon bias, but hate is in another league. Canon vs Nikon has a lot of similarities with Holden vs Ford. I have to keep on telling myself it is all a joke, and good marketing on the companies behalf

My point is: why people is not happy with what they have and getting out of their doors shooting.

Both sides Canon or Nikon all have pros and cons, none is perfect, if one is perfect than we will never see any improvements in the next released DSLR.

Come down to the play, both are toys or tools of trade, taking it seriously ain't help you in many ways, it's only make more suffering and you're at lost.

P.S: BTW we have few more happy D2x owners join the D2 family on this board today and tomorrow, congrats to all of you in achieving your new toys.
