Sam and I were planning on going to the Hunter Valley this weekend, but this has since been changed and we are now off to Jervis Bay.

Has anyone been there, and if so, where are the best places to visit? ANy nice spots for photos?

I do not have any pix's of Jervis bay so here are a few from the Hunter Valley......Tyrrells Winery.......

Jervis bay is lovely!!

Places to see: Camberwarra look out which is on the hills above Nowra

Kangaroo valley where they have this lovely old sandstone bridge

The bay itself has a white sand bottom which makes the water look lovely...

there is some nice walking around honeymoon bay on the northern arm near the naval firing range ( ) (I'm not kidding)

It's like in Dorset in the UK, near Durdle Door, you have to drive through a tank firing range.....right down the middle. Brilliant fun!!

If you're keen on a bit of swimming then there are many places to visit, but if you're just doing some site-seeing then there are even more. As MHD mentioned Honeymoon bay is great and should be peaceful this time of year, but you can also head out to Point Perpendicular from here as well which gives you a great view. The roads are all dirt but fairly well looked after. To get there head to Currarong and just before getting there you take a right at the rangers station.

If you're going down to Huskisson then I suggest in the morning just parking at the end of the main street and doing a walk along the foreshore, this will take you along various beaches and you'll get to whitesands beach which is really nice.

After that I'd recommend going to greenpatch. The bush here was burnt out a year or two ago, but it should be nice now. Lots of wildlife and the beach is really nice. Also on the road out to greenpatch there is a few side-roads you can go out to, like Hyams beach.

If you're interested in aviation at all then pop into the aviation museum at the navy base... many other places to go. If you need directions at all feel free to PM me.

My folks were just at Jervis Bay over the long wk'end.

One of the things they got upto was whale watching aboard some ship. It might be a bit pricey (~$100 a person IIRC), but you might get some nice shots out of it.

There's the national park if you're into walking/hiking, plus everything else that Owen has mentioned.

Some excellent suggestions here by the guys and Owen's suggestion of Green Patch and Hyams Beach too. If you have time go into a little town called Erowal Bay, some beautiful sunsets occur here as well as some local wildlife (mainly kangaroos). Our family used to holiday here every year for about 10 years. I have some very happy memories of the place. Also on the way from Green Patch to Erowal Bay (I think) is a beach called Pebbly beach which I'm sure you could get some nice photos of too! Have an awesome week end!

Hi Geoff. If that's the same Pebbly beach that I know about where there are a lot of kangaroos then that's much further down south, past Batemans Bay... could very well be another beach by that name though that I don't know about though.

People get "SICK" of the Hunter! coz we have more water than anywhere else in NSW to wash our car, hose the driveway and watering the gardens

hmmm Owen, I thought there was a Pebby Beach near GreenPatch...I could be mistaken. There is a Caves Beach though isn't there?

Crickey, don't know how we are going to fit it all in. Many thanks for the suggestions everyone. I want to take loads of photos, but with Sam with me I feel really guilty getting her to stand there and wait . Need to get her a D50!!!

Nothing wrong with the Hunter at all Peter. I made an executive decision to go to the Hunter and meet up but Sam over-ruled it, because she spoke to someone about Jervis Bay at work and there was the slightest mention of kangaroos!

Yep, that looks like caves beach, I haven't been there for years and years though. That image does look a lot like pebbly beach though... doesn't matter, they're all nice down this way anyway

It's been a few years since I've visited, but from a patchy memory:

Yeah, there's a Caves Beach... It's inside Booderee National Park on the same road that takes you down to the Botanic Gardens... and I even think that it's called Caves Beach Road .

From memory Caves Beach is fairly wide and flat, and timed right with the tide going out could give you some good pictures

Also in the Jervis bay area:
* Lighthouse ruins on North Head
* Governor's Head at Sunrise (do recon the day before). Entry is via a trail at Murray's beach (very white sand!)
* Botanic Gardens (see Booderee National Park site - also has a good map of the area)
* if you're really into bush walking, try a trip to Steamer's Beach (very remote, bit of a hike out )
* Breakky in Husky - one or two not too bad Cafe's along the main street.
* return the long way back to Sydney via the Kangaroo valley.

forgot one thing about Caves beach....

It could be around this time of year that the Mutton bird migration happens, and essentially they're buggered from wherever they're migrating from... and they keel over dead on the beach Doesn't happen every year, but every now and then.
