Lens Repairs???

Hi Everyone,

I have what might be a dumb question but here goes.

My AF Nikkor 35-80mm 1:4-5.6D lens which came on my old F60 body has I suspect been bumped as the zoom has become very knotchy and sticks. It has always been very smooth and a great GP lens. Is it worth getting the lens serviced and if so where would be a reasonable place to get said service carried out?

Many Thanks

Tony

Sounds like the problem that Pippin and I had with the Nikon 18-70MM DX lens that comes with the D70. I'm gathering it might be an expensive excercise. Take it to a repair center and ask them to give you a quote on the repair costs. I know with my 18-70MM they replaced the whole front zoom section of the lens which to me sounds like $$$.

Thanks Kipper,

I am on the north coast NSW and there just aren't any repair centres around here.... Can anyone suggest a place in Brisbane or the Goldcoast as these are only a couple of hours drive from here???

I hope this was a warranty repair?? Has there been many cases of these lenses having problems? Only curious as i have just ordered one to replace the 35-80mm

thanks

Yes, it was a waranty repair.

From what I can gather from the receipt, it was about 3 hours labour + parts, so not cheap.

I never dropped or whacked the lens. Might be related to how hard the lens hood was to take off early on - but thats just a theory someone suggested.

Hope everything turns out for you.

Blaize,

I believe Andersens do the repairs for the likes of Photo Continental etc.

I've heard you need to be very careful regarding their charges, I won't tell you what my mate actually calls them. However, they are the only ones that I am aware of in Brisbane. They are at Capalaba I think.

I can try to get more info if you haven't been frightened off.

Regards

Tony

Hi Blaze,

IMHO this lens is not worth repairing. You could get a decent one on ebay for about Average – Like New for $60-$120 depending on condition.

Also you could try to sell your damaged lens for "REPAIRS AS – IS” with no warranty for maybe $20-$30 on ebay. You never know.

I had two prime lenses fixed from Whiltons in Sydney, and the cheapest was $160. I presume Prime have less complicated mechanics.

Also have a look at lens for same on this forum?

The way I see it couple of hours driving or Postage to repair center and back, It is not worth it.

AF Nikkor 35-80mm 1:4-5.6D was a giveaway lens back from the 90 when you bought the first series of F90/ F60. Of course no warranty after 10 years life.
The actually lens cost around $40.00 - $50.00 at some used photography shops.
Keep it as a paperweight or just a displayed unit in your cabinet.
