raw to jpeg conversion

Postby darb on Wed Nov 24, 2004 1:17 pm

Hi there

I generally want to shoot RAW, do all my modifications, and then once happy, convert to JPEG for safe keeping

I've been doing batch conversion using nikon capture editor, if i choose "excellent quality" the images come out at around 4.5mb per jpeg ... where as if i choose the option below that, "good quality" then they come out at around 1.5mb

I really cant tell the difference to the eye, where would this difference be noticed? Would it be when printing to large prints?

I'd prefer somethign in bewteen, such as the "10" setting in photoshop CS, which results in around 2.5 - 3mb, but the nikon editor software seems to have one extreme or the other.

Woudl i be more successful doing the conversions in photoshop cs? ... when i open a NEF in CS and make changes, i only have the option to save as a PSD etc

what automated method do you guys use to convert from RAW to JPG. (once youve done all your editing.)

Cheers

Hi Darb

You can’t save 16 bit JPEGs - make them 8 bit and you will be able to save the JPEGs.

Cheers
