Nikon lens spare parts

Is it possible to purchase spare parts so that you can repair your own lens? The reason is my 18- 70 mm was deemed not economic to repair hence my insurance company has agreed to my claim . The reason for this post is that I have dismantled the lens and have found the broken part and wish to repair it my self. The part, which is broken is a diecast mount plate .This repair would be quite simple if this part can be obtained .Dose anyone know where I can obtain a parts manual and is it possible to purchase parts from Maxwells or any other supplier in Australia or O/S. thanks in advance LOZ

I don't think you can get any photographic spare parts out of Maxwell or Nikon, unless you know someone internal or anyone who works at one of the Nikon Service Centers. BTW, why didn't you pass it to the repairer under your insurance claim?

Last week I rang Maxwell and was put through to one of their technicians.

I asked if I could order parts and there were no issues to me ordering a new bayonet ring for one of my lenses.

External parts are OK, but not internal parts, as far as I known.
Make a try with them.

To do the job properly may necessitate more than just the spare part replacement. Optical assemblies must be colimated and to achieve this specialised instruments are called for.

How many out of whack pictures would it take to drive home the value of purchasing a new version of a lens deemed too low in value for insurance repair?

Loz, since it appears you are in Japan at present perhaps you could upgrade to a 17-55 or something similar economicall?

Birdbdog I joined the VR club last week 24-120mm.The kit lens was written off and payed out in full at Maxwells recommended retail price !!! .

Sheetshooter the repair is relative strait forward .The damage looked worse than what it turned out to be (looked as if it was broken in half) the lens was not dismantled for the quote. If I return it to a service centre the cost would be the same as a new one hence if the part costs lets say $50 I then have my kit lens back for $50 + 1 hour of my time and then can sell it on ebay as new in box with remaining warranty LOZ

Sheetshooter, yes, I realise that and would not dream of taking a lens apart.

It's just that I'll be of no-fixed abode over the next month or so and without a fixed timeframe of when the part will be in, the plan is to have maxwell ship the part directly to me where-ever I am and then to take the lens and part to their nearest authorised repair centre.

That way I can still continue to use the lense.

I'm only after a new bayonet ring because while it hasn't affect picture quality, I'm worried about the wear on the current one as there's a little give when the lens is on the camera.
