Epson R1800 - how much do prints cost?

Hi Guys.

I'm just wondering if someone can tell me approximately how much it would cost to print out a 6" x 8" or even an A4 image on an Epson R1800. I'm trying to figure out if it's feasible to buy one for prints for xmas, compared to getting them printed at Harvey Normans, which is 99 cents for a 6" x 8".

Don't buy a printer expecting the prints to be cheaper.

Ask yourself about the quality of the output, the speed and convenience, and - with the 1800 - the fact that you can do A3+ size prints.

If you want nothing bigger than A4, the R800 is just as good, and there's a couple of Canons that are also up to the task.

Thanks for the advice Gary. I do like the quality that I get out of harvey's, but of course I haven't seen a print from the epson to compare it with. Anyway, thanks again.

Owen, a lot of places will do a 5x7 for 20-30c and you will never beat that. On A4 it starts to make sense, A3+ is usually much cheaper. It is usually the convenience and flexibility why people get their own printer.

I have taken an estimate before about this question, think it was $2 - $2.50 for A4, do a search and you will find everyone estimates

Thanks Glen. My word it would be convenient to have a printing lab on my desk! I'm going to HN to get some test prints tonight so I'll see how they turn out.

Heath from memory it was based on ink and paper, based on $98 for 100 Ilford pearl and $1.50 for ink. I only kept score through till the first ink change, really cant remember now

On a different topic, I have to print out 30x15(double sided) sheets for a financial document, mainly text, but it needs to look pretty. Does any one know of a kind of paper that would be suitable?

Superb is not too strong a word, Heath.

it's my favourite paper.

It's the same finish as a tradition pearl photographic paper.

I'm sure there are many places to buy Ilford Pearl from but one that is convenient for myself is VANBAR, they have a website and a store in Sydney if you are out and about. Sydney store is open on Saturday's until 12:30 I believe.

Heath - I am a new user of the R1800 and I'm soo happy so far. I have bought my paper from HN and Borge Imaging in Crows Nest. As HN is closer I have gotten HN to price match Borge Imaging. For example, the Ilford Smooth Pearl Paper 6x4" was 24.95 for 30 sheets at HN, Borge price $16.30. Amazing and irritating markup by HN, and they couldn't match it but did that paper for $17.50, I bought it as it would have cost me that much to get to Borge Imaging and back in petro! Their A3 price at Borge imaging is also significantly cheaper, HN will usually price match OR come close. There are a lot of people out there that don't ask though, and that my friend is where companies like HN make their huge profits. I have been to borge imaging and have bought some equipment from them now, just some paper (a3+) as I was in the store and they have excellent customer service! Hope this helps.

I'll second that. It's the best paper I've ever used.

The prints out of my HP 1220c and Epson R210 are, as Gary said, superb.

Epson make a double sided matt Stock A4 stock number so41569........The Epson Premium Semimatt Photo Paper 250 is also great stock and is on an equal with the Ilford stock, I have found that both give me almost the same result.

Prices can vary re cost of doing your own prints, because the amount of ink being put down will vary from image to image........ A4 cost vary between $3.50 to $5.00....... A3 will vary between $9.00 and $11.00, these prices are using ultrachrome inks and premium stock.

some times HN stock the double sided Epson stock, it is the same weight as their Archival matt stock.......also have a look at the Canson range of printer stocks......... borge {0299066544} in Sydney will be able to help, ask for Matt.......

Yes, the Canon paper works quite well on the Epson printer, but I still think that the Ilford is the best.

Surprisingly, I was very disappointed when I ran some Fuji through the R1800. It sucked big time, and I've been happily using Fukji products for a very lonnnnnnng time.

Fuji will look good if you profile the stock to your printer......... for any stock, to get the best result, or one that you will be pleased with the STOCK MUST BE PROFILED TO YOUR SCREEN AND PRINTER.......

I have only used Tetenal paper with my Ep1800 and it works great. It is called Semi Matte and is really like a pearl. I will go with Gary and use Ilford Pearl next time to test the differences. Great printer though very big.

On a slightly different but related topic to the costing issue, I have not used my printer a great deal since I purchased it about six months ago. I have probably printed six or seven A3's and a few
A4's. What I have noticed is that the ink is about half out already so there must be a fair bit of evaporation going on. Any suggestions? (apart from why dont I use it more or take them out and wrap them in plastic?). The point being that to replace all the inks (8) of them at about $25 a pop is about $150 which needs to be factored into the cost the equation.

Still a groovy printer.

The first set of ink pots that you use in your printer are about 30% wasted filling up the tubes and jets. You will get better milage with your second and subsequent set. Enjoy that magnificent printer.

Purchasing your replacement inks from the same source will yield a signifcant saving too.

First of all, welcome to the forums.

While I don't wish to be critical, could I impose upon you to use something closer to English in your posts? Your question is, at best, ambiguous, and at worst, unintelligble.

I honestly can't work out if you can get an R1800 for $1400 - which is pretty bloody expensive - or if that's the price for an R2400, or what.


If you could use the tools of the English language that are readily at hand, such as something close to punctuation and captalisation, it will greatly assist the rest of us in providing you with the best answers we can. Thanx in advance for your co-operation.

The R1800 for $850 would be an absolute bargain - are you sure that you don't mean the R800??? The best price that I've seen for the R1800 is $1050...

If you truly can get the R1800 for that price, then can you get one for me too

The 1800 is a great printer, and at $850, it's either a steal, or been stolen.

I've no personal experience with the 2400, but from all reports it's even better, and at that price, my comments regarding the 1800 are equally applicable.

Is this price Oz stock, or through a Hong Kong/ebay seller?

The prices are in aussie dollars.I have a friend that works for a company called Data 3 that has a contact who is from Epson.

The price for the R2400 from harvey norman is $1800 so i think $1400 is pretty good.

The best price for the R1800 is on the net from a company in melbourne for $1000 but i can get it for a bit better than that ill let you know when i get the exact figure
