Tamron 180mm MacroIve got the 90mm Macro.... im just wondering what the 180mm would have over it.. except for the reach and length, can i get more detailed images which i can really zoom in on insects.. or will it give me the same kind of detail as the 90mm just further away

yeh it does have 1:1 on the 90mm.. didnt think there would be much more difference between the 180 and 90 cept distance from the subject

This is a common fallacy. Using a longer focal length at the same distance yes you get less DOF, but for the same magnification (1:1 in this case) you increase the distance and this cancels that out. By using a 180mm macro rather than a 90mm, you will get the same DOF at the same magnification, but you will be at a longer distance (an advantage when dealing with critters) and you will have a narrower view of the background (an advantage if there's an OOF feature in the background which is distracting: a small camera movement can avoid it). Another advantage of the 180mm over the 90mm is that the 180mm has a tripod foot: because the rig is attached to the tripod there rather than at the camera body you can easily tweak your macro compositions by rotating the lens in the collar rather than by rearranging the whole camera/head/tripod configuration. Of course there are the disadvantages of cost and weight, but nothing's ever simple.
cheers for the info Dave... much appreciated!
