CF Adapter

Just wondering if anyone has used this CF adapter. I have a few MS's from my Sony cameras, just wondering if the MS + adapter would fit inside the D70, and if it's fast enough.

TIA

My guess is that this will stick out at the back of the camera, making putting the camera up to your face "mission impossible".

How much do these cost, and compare that to the cost of of good, 45x CF card?

My recommendation is to forget this idea.

Hi Gary,

This retails for about $30, making it about $100 cheaper than a 1gb CF card. Don't know about the speed though. It does look like it will stick out but it's hard to tell from a scaled photo.

It will stick out. The size of a compact flash is standard. This device, like many of the other removable media based devices, includes the standard size of the removable media PLUS the extra device tacked on to the end.

So, let's look at this from a geometric stand point, shall we?

1 CF card + MS reader which is around 1.25-1.5x the size of a CF card created something that'll come out at your face.

Now let's look at the reasons why this is a bad idea.

1. Suppose you do get this connected, what happens if you accidentally tap it or dislodge it as the back the main CF card is certainly large enough to get even the most basic of knockings...
Well, a dislodging could very easily damage your CF pins and the card reader itself, leaving you with a very disabled camera AND a very disabled accessory you thought would be cheaper than a new CF card.

2. This is one of those devices that was made for a Pocket PC device when CF card readers were included or a lappy that had CF but not the smaller types.
As a result, just like any other card reader, there is a very high likelihood that device itself needs drivers to actually work and WILL NOT work separately on a CF-based device that doesn't have the ability to load drivers, like the D70 camera.

3. Say you get it in and it works... it'll be slow.
It has to go through the CF card then to the reader and then to the Memory Stick, which by the way, isn't all that fast memory unless you use the Pro stuff, and if you've afforded the Pro MS's, you have enough cash to spend on a simple 1gb CF card.
I would imagine that this method you're thinking about would be slower and less reliable than a Microdrive... and that's a worrying thing.

It's not hard to tell at all. This will stick out a long way (keep in mind how long the MemoryStick is as well.
Not only will it get in your face, it will stop the card bay door from closing, and the camera won't work.

These things are intended to allow people to put MemorySticks into their PDAs that have CF slots, not into cameras.

It'll stick out, making your camera virtually unusable.

Trust me.

And $130 for a CF card?

Thanks for the analysis guys, I think I'll forget about it, not worth screwing up my camera over a small saving, just thought it'd be nice to use the MS I have lying around.

Leigh, it's a 1gb MS Pro, I paid $220 for it less than a year ago, damn monopolising Sony bastards.

And $130 for a CF card?

Hmm I paid $140 for a 1gb Sandisk Ultra II a few months ago. Don't tell me it's dropped that much since. Either that or I'm a really bad shopper.

You're not a really bad shopper.

What you are is a misinformed shopper.

While you don't have posting access yet, you should still be able to view Birdy's deals.

And you're in Sydney... get to a minimeet.

I don't think those cost as much as Sandisk. Hey looky I made it over 30, can I post in the other sections yet?

Mate, I'd love to get to a minimeet, only thing is I work both weekend days, been doing it for a year. I only have one thing to say... retail SUX.

Had you been there a few weeks ago, I'd have probably said yes.

But last week the rules changed to say you had to have essentially 3 things (2 of which you have):
1. Location in your profile (CHECK!)
2. Been a member for at least a month (CHECK!)
3. At least 50 posts (essentially meaningful posts... a meaningless post is one of those where you essentially just agree and go "Yea! I think so too!"... seems to happen in the Image Critiques section and people don't think we notice.)

Bugger, 15 to go then aye.

The bargains section I can understand being members only, but Computers, and IT, and Humour, Music etc, I wonder why they are restricted, I've useful info to post to these sections in the past, only to be stopped by the "special access granted" message.

They won't be soon. We're restructuring.

And don't base it on "15 more to go" mentality. The unspoken rule is at least the number required to get in. So... you'll need more.

Anyways, back on topic.
