Bah, it's just different backlighting - using LED instead of cold cathodes. No change to the underlying liquid crystal technology of the panel itself.

Next step would be a rival manufacturer incorporating Luxeon LEDs into a monitor...

OLED was what I was expecting seeing the thread title. That would have been an evolution in the computer display market.

This is merely an incremental improvement in uniformity of lighting wrapped in marketing spiel and a high pricetag to match.
