Lens hoods for digital crop sensors

I was wondering that as lenses that are designed for film frame images have lens hoods that are designed to let the full 35mm circle of light onto the sensor, would there be benefit in a lens hood that vigniettes light to match the DX sensor?

Are there any off the shelf lens hoods that would adapt say a 70-200mm VR to only allow enough light for a DX sensor?

Does anyone do this?

This issue was brought up by KerryPierce (I think) not too long ago - I could not find the thread. I think that you are on the right track, it would be better to block that extra light from entering the lens, if you are after that last bit of image quality.

The solution for a zoom lens, with a hood that is not optimised for anything more than the wide end, might be something like an adjustable bellows lens hood.

Yes there is definitely benefit in having a more-effective hood.

If your question was about Canon lenses I could point you to some relevant pages on my website (many lenses use a common bayonet size) but I don't know what options there are for Nikon.
