Can anyone help me with this one ?

Say I take a RAW from my D70 then convert to jpg to get printed at my printers.

How do I find out what is the biggest size I can print to is ?

What is the size before you loose the fine quality of the image ?

With a 3000x2000 size image, you can print at 12" x 8" (Super 8R) size and still get a dpi of 250, which is a very good resolution for printing. I reckon you can get great 15" x 10" prints.

getting away with a 20 x 30 depends on how close you plan on standing to the picture. I would say that if you hand it on a wall at head hight then hardly anyone would notice the quality issue.

One thing that you can do use use photoshop to extrapolate and resize your pic. Although not perfect this does work and I'm pretty confident you could get a very nice print at 20 x 30.

If you're original image is sharp and well exposed then then the only limit is the distance at which it will be viewed. A good printer can make you a 20 x 16 inch image that will sing...no problems. Let the printer do the upsizing.

As aj043 mentioned, it depends on how close you are looking at it.

The sizes I was mentioning were if you were looking up close, like having the pics layed out on the desk in front of you. 30x20 I reckon would still look great if hung up on the wall.

Yeah, you can try resizing/interpolation (just do it in 10% increments) until you get an image the size of 6000x4000.

Actually I've seen a pic from a D2H (4 MP) that have been sized up and printed to a 3m size banner that's look pretty good.

I have a 4 foot by 1.5 foot pan print on my wall taken with a Sony Cybershot 3.2 Meg pixel cam.
After stitching & resizing I got it printed to the size of the file that had been created.
From what I can remember the file size was a little over 250 Meg.

As has been said in former posts it depend on the distance it is viewed from as to weather you can see an pixilation but with an image of that size it’s best viewed from a distance so there is no real prob with people asking how many meg pixel cam was used.

a little while ago at a UNI course I saw a fellow student increase the size of his 4Mb full size image of a model using Photoshop. He did it in increments; 10 % at a time. He ended up doing a life size print.
Something like 1m x 1.5m
Even at a viewing distance of 30cm NO pixelation was evident.
I've also seen a "life size" foto from a 1Mb image at the UNI.
Some pixelation evident, but from a 2 to 3 m viewing distance away an incredible photo.

G'day Mic,

I've had a D70 shot of a waterfall printed at 20"x30" and it came up great... I was impressed as to how well it came up, although that was initally taken as a raw file and converted to single layer TIFF when PP was finished... That's with no changes to resolution, the printers simply printed it out at what-ever size I wanted... The printing place was using PhotoShop CS.

I say you can get away with 20" x 30" but only if you use interpolation that plugins can give you.
