3 questions - File resizing and JPG recovery 1.
What's the best / easiest method to make a reasonable thumbnail from an image? 2. What method do you use to reduce the size of an image for posting? I want to downsize images to post, down to 800x600 or maybe 1024x768 but think I can remember the "fine print" saying to post an image, try keeping it down to 800x600 or something like that. When I downsize, they still end up as quite large files, and when I right click on the file and "properties", I can still see all the guff that goes with the photo - aperture size, zoom length and all the rest. I want to get rid of all that so I end up with the smallest filesize possible but still have a quite acceptable image for posting. What file size should they end up as? Thoughts? 3. A friend of mine has an Olympus camera. He had a disk crash and now many of his photos cannot be viewed. I have copies of them all, but can't seem to get any program to open them. Does anyone know of any software that I can use to tell the software "this is a jpg, repair it" and see whether it is possible? Any other ideas? I have used a hex viewer and it still looks like a jpg, no word docs or large blank sections or anything, so I'm hoping it isn't too many bits or bytes in the wrong place. Any input on any of these questions would be appreciated. BTW I have PS CS but haven't got my drivers license for it yet... Lots of time required for that one... Tas,
ok open the file in PShop. go to image in the menu. Change your max pixel size to 1000 pixels. Next go to FILE save for web look at the bottom left and it will show the size of you image as in megs. Adjust your jpeg settings to about 200K. Save this image to your hard drive. Post to your website and Wallah jethro shoot it real.
look! and see. Shoot and feel
1. Where are you hosting your photos on the Web? Many photo sites create a thumbnail for you after you submit your full sized photo. Simply find the link to that thumbnail and use that in your image posts... See my Sticky thread at the top of the Image Critique section to find out how to post a thumbnail with a link to a larger version of the photo.
2. Jethro's right... Save for web will strip out all the extraneous guff in your jpg file and will achieve the smallest sized file. Alternatively, if you use Windows XP, try using the image resizer Power Toy. Simply right click on your photo and choose resize photo... This usually achieves quite a small file size as well... 3. Sorry - no idea on this one... Cheers, John

I have 20Mb available for storage with my internet provider, so I have been using that for now. I imagine I will have to fork out the bucks and use smugmug or something once I fill my space. If I can ever get ADSL broadband in my area it will then be well worth my while as I can then set up a proper web page for myself. Been there, done that...(link) Thanks for the How To... Thanks to Leek and Jethro for that one. Thanks for the link as well, downloaded already and will "go play..." :( Share what you know, learn what you don't.
