Hi All, Well i know at some stage i might need a monopod, hell even a new tripod oneday, but would like suggestions on a poor mans monopod, something that wont break the bank and handle the D70 with a 70-300 on it.
Well 5 am up again so off to bed will check back in the morning when i get up for work.

I bought an aluminium manfroto for $69

dont but a cheap tripod... put that money aside and save up 9and sell goods) to get a decent tripod..

as one website says (who's url eludes me)
you can spend 1500 or 1000 on a tripod
a good tripod system=1000
a whole heap of cheap tripods and finaly a good one =500 + 1000

A tripod, with two out of three legs retracted, could act as a monopod substitute.

Have you seen the Reznick brace? (ie. how Ron Reznik recommends hand holding a camera in his e-book). Perhaps on coming Saturday I'll get MattK to demonstrate and take a picture of him in this pose and post it here... since this would be the optimum way of not breaking any copyrights.

for the price it's extremely sturdy and has no problems with my 300mm....

it's sturdy... the extensions lock in fine...

i had a very tight budget and i'm happy with the purchase...

Mate I was surprised when I looked into mono’s

You can pick up one of Manfrotto’s pro jobs for around the $100 mark.

Then later down the track grab a quick release head for it, there around the $50 mark.

Talking legs, they're so many options and pricing, I have 3 Gitzo CF legs and two monopod legs: 01 x Gitzo 1588 CF and other Man. 343B.
All between those you can see the big difference among them when you touch, play with lenses, heads etc...
I can't comment what's good and bad, they're all suitable for each demand and your pocket same as your camera and glasses.
But here is my conclusion:
- If you're thinking a lust of lenses in zoom range of 80-400/ 70-200VR or more longer as 300, 400, go for the best one you can.
- If you're not thinking of above then the Man 190 or the Gitzo 1027 will do the job for the rest with the D70 and providing you still have to be carefull once use it under strong wind, unstable platform.
Yes, someone invest in the legs and head more than 1G and they always have a reason.

Mate, just buy a bit of chain and a 1/4 bolt into the tripod hole. Stand on the chain and pull up and Voila you have a monopod (and can also lock up your bycycle with it).
