50 1.8 ok for presantations?Hi all, got conned to go and do an Apprenticeship Award nite tonite and well i hate flash, but what do you sugest, i thought the 50m 1.8 be ok or kit lens, i am going for 50m at the moment as would be good in low light but i will just have to move around a bit thats all.
Anyhelp would be good, well just your thoughts anyhow. Thanks in advance. D3,D2x,D70,18-70 kit lens,Sigma 70-200mm F2.8EX HSM,Nikon AF-I 300m F2.8, TC20E 2X

With your 300/2.8 and stay long far away from the stage, it's still better.

Depending on distance from the stage and other circumstances of location I'd go with the 70-200 f2.8. Whilst I don't own one I do own an 80-200 F2.8 Nikon and would most definetly back that lens and image produced anywhere. You know you are going to get close if you need to zoom and you can stay well back from all the 'heat'. With my SB800 attached or not I'd have no hesitation of getting the shot and good ones at that. I'm sure the quality of the Sigma, added to your skill, would also produce greta results. Mind you I'd also carry my 35-70 f/2.8 nikkor in case I got close up opportunity, in your case i'd have the 50 f/1.8 in the pocket as well.

yeh love that birdy, Scott i really dont know what the setup is in there as i have never been in this new section so will be all new to me. I always carry the 50m 1.8 in my bag anyhow so yeh toss up kit lens, 50m or take 70-200 incase.

Have a new business card Logo with all that you'll end up carrying - John 'The Mule" Bonney's Photography - I got it I'll Hump-IT.
Either way I know they'll come out smicko John, provided they get the certificates presented on a motorbike cheers marco
Marco thats the go, maybe i take one of the kids.LOL yeh that is a logo a fellow i know who has a concrete pump, "dont hump it Pump it" well just as well i have broad shoulders, very broad.LOL Things i get conned into.
Maro let me tell i have a 60 ltr plastic tub i put all my gear in, so it is a matter of picking it all up and dumping in the car, than carry the case with the 300m in it. I do so much need another bag of sorts, actually i think fozzie has a back pack might have a look at his and try it on as i haven't brought 1 as not sure if it would fit around my broard shoulders. Kit lens. Camera set to manual 1/125 sec @ f5.6 and pop up flash. Get close. Relax. Concentrate on getting handshakes and faces. Nothing will go wrong. Keep it simple. Let the camera work its magic. Regards

Re: 50 1.8 ok for presantations?
Hi 50 f1.8 alone will not be enough. You need a wide for group or stage coverage and a tele for close up. 18-70 and 70 - 200 would be what you would need. And use your flash - it will make a world of difference. regards, Arthur
Thanks all, Job done ended up using 70-200 so yeh was a bit cramped for space but got the shots anyhow.
Thanks again. D3,D2x,D70,18-70 kit lens,Sigma 70-200mm F2.8EX HSM,Nikon AF-I 300m F2.8, TC20E 2X

I told Ya! the 300 will be perfectly and you don't have to stay close The 50 is OK if you knew where are you going to be seated, or seat close to the stage, otherwise the 70-200 is more than suitable. Birddog114
