It's nice and cheap but it's for small and compact camera P&S, won't work well with DSLR, perhaps for small lens or macro

Yeah Idon't think a D70 with a 70-200 VR hanging off it wold have to much suport!!!!

Any thing above a small fart would have a good chance of blowing it over

It looks like the one the salesman "threw-in" when I bought my D70, I still have it in its box, waiting to give it away to some unsuspecting P&S person. Until then its an emergency (xmass) present for a teenager.

Interesting thought, but possibly not workable, as I expect that these will be too short for where you need to place your lighting.

IME, the typical extension of these types of tripods is around 5' - 5'6", whereas for lighting, I want to have up to 8' so that the lighting, onto a 6' subject, is still coming somewhat from above.

You would be right about its height being insufficient for normal portrait work. I was thinking in terms of macro work using a backdrop (white or black foam board). For that sort of work 4-5 feet is sufficient - for me any way. I usually setup with my subject not more than 18 inches (usually closer) above the table (or floor). This is about the only good use I can see for these el cheapo tripods. If they are up to carrying an umbrella as well that would be a huge bonus.

You might want to take a look at the Manfrotto tabletop tripod with its tiny ballhead.

Just for fits and giggles we mounted my 80-400VR onto this, and then mounted my D70 onto the backend of that. We were quite surprised at the strength and stability that this pocketable tripod provided to this heavyweight combo;

Here is Onyx's shot of the setup.



We then mounted one of the RRS ballheads onto the tripod, and that turnmed a quite acceptable scenario into one that was solid and absolutely useable. Either would work, with the RRS making it about as solid as you could expect given the (lack of) mass of the 'pod.

The only improvement you could make would be with either tent pegs or gaffa tape to secure the tripod.
