Hi all, my name is John and I'm the proud new owner of a D70. I've been watching this forum for a few days and all your enthusiam convinced me to follow the light rather than the dark (Canon) side!!

My apologies to Birdog for not buying from him, but yesterday was the first chance in 2 weeks that I had to do some shopping and I just didnt have a chance to sort it out via email. Got it from HN for $2199 with 18-70 ED and Tamron 70-300 LD. Add $200 cashback and I'm happy. Also add that the Nikon70-300 ED is optically identical to the Tamron (and rumored to be made by Tamron) and I'm even happier!!

My dumb questions are:

1. I believe it is traditional to post your first photo. How do you attach JPGs to posts? I dont have a handy website to direct you all to.

2. What size JPGs are accetable? <100k I would assume.

3. I've noticed that the approximate images remaining is wildly innacurate especially in RAW mode. Are/have Nikon released a firmware update to correct this?

4. I want to use photoshop to massage my images, so therefore I want to set the colour mode to II, I thought I'd done that following the instructions in the manual but they are all coming out Ia or IIIa, no matter what modes/settings I'm using. What have I done wrong?

To purchase from me or not is not a major issue and i'm not doing this for living, just for fun as many members already known.

The Nikon 70-300G is not made by Tamron or vice versa, it's just rumor from other forums. I confirmed that cos I talked to both Nikon (Japan) and Tamron last year in Sydney at one of the event that Maxwell sponsored. The Nikon 70-300G is around $200,00 and the Tamron is $130.00 to $150.00, the D70 kit is $1950.00- $1995.00, you'll do the sum from here.

You need a website or somewhere host your photos and you paste the link to your message.

Welcome John, There is no firmware update to fix the pessimistic Raw remaining images. It is roughly double what is indicated. The reason is that is a worst case scenario as all images are different sizes depending on complexity

Thanks for the info birddog, a few lens review sites actually lump the Nikkor ED and the Tamron together with the same score, so true or false they appear to have similar performance. (Note I'm talking about the ED not the G).

Glen, It's a bit silly really:) I took 27 photos today but according tto the camera I'd only used 12!! It is verrrrryyy conservative....

Welcome Johndec - you will find that we are a nice bunch of gals and guys.

As to the RAW situation - take photo’s of a white wall (say 10) and see how many pics you have left - then take 10 photo’s of a subject that has lots of colour and shapes and you will find that the white photo count might be 3 and the colour count might be 5.

It is better to be conservative and say wow than not be and say oh bugger!!!

Hi John, welcome to our forums. I'm glad ya registered and posted and not remained lurking. Think of how much more productive it will be to ask questions and interact with the rest of us instead of just being a spectator.

In answer to your questions not addressed by previous posters - 100k is a little conservative. I tend to double that as my guideline. I also assume people have 1024x768 monitor resolution, and try not to go too far over that for posted image size (I usually resize to a third or a quarter the full size images from the D70). But the assumptions and choices are totally up to you.

You'll need to upload to a website to share your pics. Try http://www.pixspot.com - it's managed by a fellow forum member Kristine. So she'll be on hand to sort out any problems or questions regarding the use of the gallery.

Changing colour modes will only be active in P, S, A or M modes. All the other "idiot modes" default to sRGB. Go to the shooting menu (green camera icon), optimize image, custom, and color mode. You know you've successfully chosen AdobeRGB when your filenames have an underscore prefix (eg. _DSC0001.jpg).

Thanks for the info Onyx. I'll get in touch with Kristine and see if she'll host a few pics. As far as the colour modes go, I eventually figured it out! What I'd done wrong was I set it to mode II in the custom menu, but left the default at normal instead of custom.... Doh!
