I believe this has been touched on before in this forum and after reading iNovas suggestion I thought it might be a good idea for all of our members to lodge their camera, lens etc serial numbers on a database with this forum - I am sure it would give all of us a sense of security to know that there is a depository of this information IMHO.

What do others think on this?

Could we appoint some one from the forum to make up a list of all our numbers of gear to be cataloged & keep at there place????

The only time this information would be on line is when it’s being sent to that person for cataloging.

It was decided that it wasn't really the best idea to put everybody's serial numbers into the one central database. Security of the database was one of the major concerns, but what would the end use really be?

A better solution was to simply develop a database of stolen equipment. This will be accessible by the public, but only users here can add items to it. Look for this sometime in January.

In the interim, I would recommend that everyone simply records their equipment serial numbers and descriptions in a simple Excel spreadsheet or Access database; it's not hard to do, and can be invaluable in the event of something untoward happenning to your gear.

just in addition to what gary was saying about listing you serial numbers in an excel spreadsheet. It is also a good idea to email this to a web based email service like hotmail so it can be backed up offsite and accessed from anywhere.

Yes.

In fact, your ISP provides you with 20MB webspace or whatever. Typically, that content goes into a specific folder off your root.

But you can create other folders off root, and if they're not in the webspace hierarchy, then they're not publicly accessible. So you can simply FTP the file to that private part of your allocated webspace, and again, it's private but accessible from anywhere in the world.

And you don't have to deal with HotSpam.

I will have this database ready for the forum in the near future. I am away from home at the moment (in Sydney) for at least the next month; I have very limited Internet access (see my lack of posts over the past week or so) and with the time I am able to be online I have to fulfil work commitments. I am also working on integrating the pixspot gallery into the D70 forum for all members. I should have the gallery integration available over the next few days. This will allow the gallery to be available as part of the forum - which will be much more convenient for members.
